should be taken to see that the top of
the battery is kept clean o f acid film and d irt. When
cleaning b a tteries, wash fir s t with a dilute ammonia
or soda solution to n eu tralize any acid present and
then flush o ff with clean w ater. Keep vent plugs tight
so that the neu tralizing solution does not enter the
c e ll.
The hold down b olts should be kept tight enough
to preven t the battery fro m
holder, but they should not be tightened to the point
where the battery case w ill be placed under a se v e re
strain.
T o insure good contact, the battery cables should
be tight on the battery posts. O il battery term in al
fe lt w asher. If the b attery posts o r cable term in als
are
corroded, the cables should be cleaned sepa­
ra tely with a soda solution and w ire brush. A fte r
cleaning and b efore installing clam ps, apply a thin
coating o f petrolatum to the posts and cable clam ps
to help reta rd co rrosion .
If the battery has rem ained undercharged, check
fo r loose o r d efective fan belt, d efective D elcotron,
high
resista n ce
in
regu lator contact points, or a low voltage setting.
If the battery has been using too much w ater, the
voltage output is too high.
Service Delcotron and Regulator
The D elcotron and regu lator tests during tune up con­
sist
o f
the
above
b attery
battery indicating fu rther tests and adjustments as out­
lined in Section 6Y.
Service Belts (Fig. 8)
Inspect belt condition.
Check and adjust if n ecessa ry fo r c o rre c t tension of
b elt, as follow s:

• Using a strand tension gauge, check the belt tension.
• If belt is below the minimum, adjust until the sp ec­
ified tension, is reached.
Specification section.
Service Manifold Heat Valve (Fig. 9 or 10)
Check
m anifold
P a r ­
operation. If shaft is sticking, fre e it up with GM M ani­
fold Heat Control Solvent o r its equivalent.
NOTE:
Tap shaft end to end to help fre e it up.
Tighten Manifold
Tighten intake m anifold bolts to sp ecificatiin s in the
sequence outlined on Torqu e Sequence Chart located at
end o f Engine M echanical section. A slight leak at the
