SPEEDOMETER ADAPTER CONTROL SWITCH
Replacement
1. R em ove
tran sm ission
m ove the two s cre w s
transm ission shift le v e r .
switch housing to rubber case and slid e switch hous­
ing fro m rubber case.
2. Rem ove two s c rew s retaining adapter control switch
to
switch housing and disconnect e le c tr ic a l leads
fro m switch (fig . 75).
3. Connect e le c tr ic a l leads to new switch, position and
secure adapter con trol switch to switch housing with
retaining screw s.
4. R ein stall switch housing to rubber case and secure
with
pin.

M odels 17121 and 17101 (18,500 lb.) use identical d if­
fe re n tia l head assem b lies, the only d ifferen ce being the
s iz e o f the ring and pinion g e a r (fig . 76).
M odel
19101 (23,000 lb .) axle is s im ila r to that of
M odel 17121 and 17101 see F igu re 76 except that many
components are increased in s iz e to obtain a g re a te r
capacity rating.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION
V A C U U M SHIFT CONTROL SWITCH

Replacement
1. Rem ove the two screw s securing the axle shift con­
tro l
va lve
bracket.
NOTE:
Do not disconnect con trol va lv e v a c ­
uum, atm osphere o r a ir clea n er lin es.
2. T ilt o r slid e the control va lve as requ ired to obtain
access to cable retaining sc re w and disconnect cable
fro m v a lve.
3. Withdraw cable fro m
fro m
switch housing on transm ission shift le v e r.
4. R em ove the transm ission shift le v e r knob, then r e ­
m ove the two screw s retaining switch housing case to
transm ission le v e r.
e te r adapter switch to new housing.
5. L o o s e ly in sta ll the new switch housing case in ap­
p roxim ately the same position as the old housing,
and in stall control cable and knob assem bly by fe e d ­
ing end o f cable through switch housing and conduit.
6. Secure switch housing to transm ission le v e r as sp e­
cifie d in Step 5 of "V acuum Shift Unit Control Switch
R eplacem ent" .
7. Seat shoulder on control cable knob against housing,
then tighten set s crew to retain cable at the axle shift
control va lve, and in sta ll va lv e -to -b ra c k e t retaining
screw s.

Drive Pinion Oil Seal
bearing type, and are a p ress fit on the d riv e pinion shaft.
A straight r o lle r type p ilot bearing is p ressed onto the
inner end o f the d rive pinion and seats in a machined bore
in the d ifferen tia l c a r r ie r .
D rive pinion bearing preload adjustment is controlled
by thickness of the bearing spacer installed between the
two tapered r o lle r bearings.
Shims between the pinion cage and c a r r ie r provid e a
means fo r adjusting pinion depth in the c a r r ie r to attain
c o r r e c t tooth contact between the ring gear and pinion.
DIFFERENTIAL
The d iffe re n tia l c a r r ie r assem bly may be rem oved,
while the axle is s till installed in the truck, a fte r the axle
shafts have been rem oved.
