Be sure the locking pins are centered in

and in stall the coupling.

On 10-30 s e r ie s trucks, push the cou­
pling onto the w orm shaft until the coupling re in ­
forcem en t bottoms against the end of the worm .
3. In stall
the
sp ecial
torque to 30 ft. lbs.
NOTE:
The bolt must pass through the shaft
undercut.
NOTE:
The steerin g shaft coupling fa sten er is
an im portant attaching part in that it could af­
fe c t the p erform a n ce of vita l components and
system s, and/or could resu lt in m ajor re p a ir
expense.
It must be rep laced with one of the
sam e part number o r with an equivalent part if
replacem en t becom es n ecessary.

Torque values must be used as sp ecified
during reassem b ly to assure p rop er retention of
this part.

R ein stall the g e a r o r column as outlined la te r in this
section.
Be sure to maintain a coupling to flange
dim ension o f .250" to .375". On 10-30 s e r ie s trucks,

fashion a hook out of heavy gauge w ire and pull the
plastic spacers away from the locking pins (fig. 10).
C A U TIO N :
Under no circum stances should the
veh icle be d riven until the p lastic spacers have
been rem oved fro m the locking pins.

splined slip joint.

Separate the upper coupling
as d escrib ed below , rem ove interm ediate shaft
and coupling and disassem ble lo w e r coupling on
bench.
Removal
1. A fte r m arking steerin g shaft to w orm shaft rela tion ­
ship, rem ove bolt, nut and washer fro m clamp on
steerin g gea r worm shaft.
2. On
tilt
cab
m odels,
screw s.
3.
F ro m the upper yoke of the u n iversa l joint, rem ove
the two snap rin gs, then rem o ve the two yoke bush­
ings and cork o r rubber w ashers, by tapping yoke
shaft with p la stic m allet.
4. M ove the cen ter cross as n ecessa ry, to separate the
upper and lo w e r portions of the coupling.
5. R em ove the coupling fro m the veh icle.
6. D isassem ble lo w e r portion o f coupling on bench, by
repeating Steps 3 and 4.
Installation
1. P o sitio n
center c ro ss in lo w er yoke of coupling.
2. P o sitio n
bushing and new cork washer on center
cross.
In stall retaining snap ring.
On these m odels,
