design. Torque values must be used as sp ecified
during reassem b ly to assure p ro p er retention o f
this part.
4. Install brake components on flange and connect hy­
draulic line to wheel cylin d er inlet. R e fe r to Section
5 fo r brake assem bly procedu re.
5. B leed and adjust brakes as outlined in Section 5.
A x le Shaft Installation (Except Dana)
1. Slide axle shaft into place.

2. Install axle shaft
and push shaft outward so that shaft lock seats in
counterbore o f d iffe re n tia l side gea r.
3. P o sitio n d ifferen tia l pinion shaft through case and
pinions, aligning hole in shaft with lock screw hole in
case.
4. Using a new gasket, install c a r r ie r co v e r and torque
bolts to specification s.
CAUTIO N:
Make sure both gasket surfaces on
c a r r ie r and co v e r a re
new gasket.
Torqu e c a r r ie r bolts in a c r o s s ­
w ise pattern to ensure uniform draw on co ver
gasket.

F ill axle with lubricant to a le v e l even with bottom o f
f i lle r hole. See Section 0 fo r p ro p er lubricant.
6. Install brake drum and wheel and tir e
7. L o w er veh icle and rem o ve fro m hoist.
Dana A x le Shaft Installation
1. 10 S e r ie s --In s ta ll left-hand axle shaft and install
four bolts holding flange plate to axle flange.
a. With adjuster nut loosened on right axle flange
install axle into housing and install flange nuts.
b. Torque adjusting nut to 35-40 ft. lbs. Back o ff on
adjusting nut 60° and install adjusting nut lock.
Install drums.

o v e r hub studs. T orqu e hub stud nuts to sp ecifica ­
tions.
W heel Bolt Replacement (Fig. 3 3 )
Removal
1. R aise veh icle on hoist allow ing axle to hang fr e e ly
2. R em ove wheel and tire and brake drum.
3. Using T o o l J-5504 o r J-6627 p re s s out stud.
Installation
1. P la ce
new stud in axle flange hole. Slightly start
stud serratio n s in hole by fir m ly p ressin g back o f
stud with your hand.
2. Install a lug nut with flat side fir s t (tapered face
outboard). Tighten on lug nut drawing stud into flange
until stud head is bottom ed on back side o f flange.
3. R em ove lug nut.
4. R ein stall brake drum and w heel and tir e .
5. L o w er veh icle and rem o ve fro m hoist.
Pinion Flange, Dust Deflector a n d /o r O il Seal
Replacement
1. R aise veh icle on hoist.

flange. Separate re a r u niversal joint, tape trunnion
bearings to joint, position p ro p e lle r shaft to one side
and tie it to fra m e side ra il.
4. Using T o o l J-5853 with Adapter J-5810 and a suitable
socket on the pinion flange nut, rotate the pinion
through s e v e ra l com plete revolutions and re c o rd the
torque req u ired to keep the pinion turning (fig. 34).
If flange is to be reused, m ark pinion and flange fo r
reassem bly in the same re la tiv e position.
5. Install T o o l J-8614-1
pinion flange nut (fig .
flange so that the four notches a re toward flange.)
D iscard nut and use a new one upon rea ssem b ly.
6. Thread pilot end o f T o o l J-8614-3 into sm all O.D.
end o f J-8614-2. Then with J-8614-1 installed as in
Step 4, in sert J-8614-2 into J-8614-1 and turn it 45
d eg rees to locked position. Rem ove flange by turn­
ing J-8614-3 while holding J-8614-1 (fig. 36).
7. P r y old seal out o f b ore, using a screw d r iv e r o r a
ham m er and ch isel.
8. Inspect pinion flange fo r
worn d rive splines, damaged ears, and fo r sm ooth­
ness
o f
b e a r i n g
contact
necessary.
9. If d eflecto r re q u ire s replacem ent, rem ove by tapping
from flange, clean up stake points;
