6. Continue to rotate the crankshaft until the indicator
reads ze ro . T h is w ill be a check on the accuracy of
the o rig in a l indicator reading.
7. If camshaft readings fo r a ll lobes a re within sp eci­
fication s, rem o ve dial indicator assem bly.

Removal
1. R em ove valve lift e r s as outlined.

3. R em ove g r ille as outlined in Section 13.
4. R em ove fuel pump as outlined in Section 6M.
5. A lig n tim ing gea r m arks then rem o ve the two cam ­
shaft thrust plates sc rew s by working through holes
in the cam shaft gea r (fig . 14L).
6. R em ove the cam shaft and gea r assem bly by pulling
it out through the fron t o f the block.
NOTE:
Support
cam shaft
m oving so as not to damage cam shaft bearin gs.
Installation
1. Install the cam shaft and gea r assem bly in the engine
block, being carefu l not to damage cam shaft bearings
or camshaft.
2. Turn crankshaft and camshaft so that the valve tim ­
ing m arks on the g e a r teeth w ill line up (fig. 14L).
Push cam shaft into position. Install cam shaft thrust
plate to block screw s and torque to specification s.
3. Check camshaft and crankshaft gea r run out with a
dial indicator (fig . 15L). The cam shaft g e a r run out
should not exceed .004" and the crankshaft gea r run
out should not exceed .003".
4. If gea r run out is e x c es s iv e , the gea r w ill have to be
rem oved and any bu rrs cleaned fro m the shaft or
the gea r w ill have to be replaced.
5. Check the backlash between the tim ing gea r teeth
with a dial indicator (fig . 16L). The backlash should
be not le s s than .004" nor m ore than .006".
6. Install fuel pump as outlined in Section 6M.
7. Install g r ille as outlined in Section 13.
8. Install crankcase front co v er as outlined.
9. Install va lve lift e r s as outlined.
Tinning Gears
Replacement

m oved using T o o l J-8105 (fig . 17L). T o install crankshaft
g ea r
use T o o l J-5590
