REAR SUSPENSION AND DRIVE LINE 4-12
2. P la c e top pad locating slid e on top spring leaf, then
position top pad to saddle bolts and nuts and tighten
snugly. Tighten top pad set screw s to sp ecification s,
then tighten set s crew locknuts to sp ecifications.
IMPORTANT:
The top pad set screw s must be
tightened to s p ecified torque to p ro p e rly seat
spring against machined face o f saddle b efo re
tightening top pad to saddle bolts.
3. Tighten top pad to saddle bolts to sp ecifications,
hold nuts at bottom w hile using torque wrench on bolt
heads at top.
4. Install spring eye pin through hanger and spring eye,
with slot in pin aligned with lock bolt holes in hanger.
Use a soft ham m er to d riv e pin in fro m outer side.
Install spring eye pin lock bolt, w asher and nut and
tighten firm ly .
Install lubrication fitting in inner end
o f pin.
5. Install rebound b olt and spacer in lo w er end o f re a r
hanger and in stall locknut.

EQ UALIZING BEAMS
Removal
1. Support fram e
so springs a re lifte d just enough to
rem o ve weight o f equalizin g beam from b ea m -to -a x le
hanger adapters.
2. Rem ove nut fro m b e a m -to -a x le adapter bolt and r e ­
m ove bolt and adapter by p rying adapter at head of
bolt out o f hanger (See F igu re 23), then p ry out oppo­
site adapter. Repeat this operation at other end of
beam and at both ends o f opposite beam .
3. Support
equalizing beam s and c ro s s tube to take
weight o ff cen ter bushings. R em ove nuts fro m four
studs securing spring saddle caps to bottom o f spring
saddle (two caps at each beam ). R em ove caps from
studs.

4. L o w er the beam s and tube from veh icle and pull
beam s o ff tube.
Repairs
Bushing Replacement
End and center bushings may be rem oved and new
bushings installed using suitable tools.
Installation
R e fe r to Figu re 24.
1. Apply an anti-ru st lubricant to inside o f beam center
bushing. Insert end o f cro ss tube in bushing and push
tube into bottom o f sleeve.
2. Apply an anti-ru st lubricant to inside surface o f the
center bushing in other beam and slid e onto cro ss
tube until tube bottom s in bushing sleeve.
CAUTIO N:
Be sure cro ss tube is a ll the way
into both bushing sleeves and, while beam s are
on
the cro ss tube, keep c ro ss tube le v e l so
beam s do not slide o ff the tube.
Position the assem bly under veh icle and move the

beams outboard on cro ss tube just fa r enough so
beam ends a re in line with axle hangers and center
bushings a re in line with spring saddles.
4. Support cro ss tube secu rely on suitable lift and ra ise
tube and beams so ends enter hangers and center
bushings enter saddles.
5. Install saddle caps on studs and install nuts.
6. Lin e up beam end in axle hanger bracket, install
adapter and bolt in one side o f hanger and install
second adapter and nut on end o f bolt.
7. Repeat step 6 at other end o f beam and at both ends
o f opposite beam.
8. Position veh icle so suspension supports weight and
tighten a ll nuts to specifications.
