5. R eassem ble the r e a r u n iversal joint, making sure
that " U " bolts a re drawn up tight and locked p rop ­
e rly .
Caution should be taken not to overtighten " U "
bolt nuts and cause b earing cups to becom e distorted.
6. Install re a r w h eels, rem o ve stand jacks, and low er
veh icle.
7. T e s t operation o f brakes and re a r axle.
A xle Vent
Replacement
S ervice
replacem en t axle housing assem b lies a re not
equipped with an axle vent; th e re fo re , always make sure
that a new vent assem bly is installed when rep lacin g the
housing. If axle vent re q u ire s replacem ent, p ry old vent
fro m
housing being sure that entire vent is rem oved.
P r ic k punch around c a r r ie r hole to insure fit o f re p la c e ­
ment vent. Tap new vent into housing using a soft-fa ced
ham m er.
Vent should be positioned in housing so that
fla t surface is toward cen terlin e o f d iffe re n tia l c a r r ie r
(fig . 41).

Removal and Installation
1. Rem ove bolts and lock w ashers that attach the axle
shaft flange to the w heel hub.
2. Install two 1/2"-13 b olts in the threaded holes p ro ­
vided in the axle shaft flange. By turning these bolts
altern ately the axle shaft may be e a s ily started and
then rem oved fro m the housing (fig . 42).
3. Thoroughly clean both the axle shaft flange and the
end o f the wheel hub.
NOTE:
Any lubricant on these su rfaces tends
to loosen axle shaft flange bolts.
4. P la c e a new gasket o v e r the axle shaft and position
the axle shaft in the housing so that the shaft splines
enter the d iffe re n tia l side g e a r. P o sitio n gasket so
that holes are in alignm ent and install flange-to-hub
attaching b o lts --to rq u e b olts to sp ecifications.

to bolt threads. Use ca re in the amount o f sea le r
applied,
as
in
too
heavy an application, the
sea ler may be fo rced out as the bolt is installed
and may destroy sealing e ffe c t o f the fla n g e -to -
hub gasket.

Removal and Installation
1. R em ove hub cap, and install T o o l J-8117 in tapped
hole on shaft flange.
2. Install slid e ham m er (T o o l J-2619) and rem o ve axle
shaft (fig . 43).
3. Thoroughly rem ove old gasket m a teria l fro m hub and
hub cap. Clean shaft flange and mating su rfaces in
the wheel hub.
4. Install axle shaft so that the flange splines index into
hub splines.
Tap shaft into position, using J-8117
and J-2619.
5. Install new hub cap-to-hub gasket, position hub cap to
hub
and
install
attaching
specification s.

Removal and Installation
1. R em ove the axle shaft flange-to-hub retaining nuts.
(R e fe r to F igu re 44).
2. S trike the center o f shaft flange with a lead ham m er
to loosen flange and dowels.
3. R em ove tapered dow els fro m
shaft from
housing.
