Repairs
Steering Knuckle a n d Kingpin
R em ove and s e r v ic e
kingpin and steerin g knuckle as
outlined under Steering Knuckle.
A x l e Center
T h ere are two conditions which, if eith er exists w ill
n ecessitate replacem ent o f axle center.
1. If kingpin holes in axle center ends are worn to such
an extent that a new standard o r o v e r s iz e kingpin fits
lo o se ly , axle cen ter must be replaced.
2. If axle cen ter has been twisted o r bent m ore than 5
d eg ree s fro m
o rig in a l shape, center should be r e ­
placed.
A s a gen eral rule, when an extrem e bent
condition exists, minute fractu res which may be in ­
v is ib le w ill occur, and fa ilu re under ordin ary o p e r­
ating conditions w ill resu lt. Check axle center fo r
tw ist with alignm ent instrum ents.

te r fo r minute fra c tu re s . A xle centers should always
be straightened cold. Under no circu m stan ces should
heat be applied.
Installation

use replacem ent parts o f le s s e r quality o r sub­
stitute design.

1. R o ll
ra ise up against spring seats, making sure spring
center bolts index in spring seats.
2. P la ce " U " bolts and " U " bolt spacers o v e r springs.
Install
(w here used), " U " bolt nuts and torque as outlined
in Specifications.
3. Connect shock absorber low er eye.
4. Install
If equipment is
knuckle as outlined in Section 5-B rakes.
5. Install steerin g arm and the rod assem bly and torque
bolts as shown in Specifications.
6. P la ce hub and drum assem blies o v e r spindles and
adjust wheel bearin gs as outlined under W heel B ea r-
ings-Adjust.
7. Install wheel and tire assem blies, and lo w e r veh icle.
Check
n ecessary.
8. L o w er veh icle on hoist.
