surface on the crankshaft.
2„ Install new seal so that open end o f seal is toward
the inside o f c o v e r and d riv e it into position with
T o o l J-23042 (fig . 12L).

NOTE:
P ro ced u re
is s im ila r to that used fo r
checking valve tim ing. If im p rop er va lve op era­
tion is indicated, m easure the lift o f each push
rod
in
consecutive
readings.

1. R em ove va lve m echanism as outlined.
2. P osition
indicator
with b all socket adapter (T o o l
J-8520) on push rod (fig . 13L).
3. Rotate
the
crankshaft
rotation until the lift e r is on the heel o f the cam
lobe. A t this point, the push rod w ill be in its low est
position.
4. Set dial indicator on z e ro , then rotate the crankshaft
slow ly, o r attach an au xilia ry
" bump"
the engine o v e r, until the push rod is in the
fu lly ra ised position.
CAUTIO N:
The distribu tor p rim a ry lead must
be disconnected fro m
c o il and the ignition switch must be in the on
position.
F a ilu re to do this w ill resu lt in a
damaged grounding c ircu it in the ignition switch.
