2. Shift the transm ission into high gear.
3. Mount transm ission on dolly o r jack and m ove into
position under the v e h icle.
4. A lig n the tran sm ission main d riv e g ea r shaft with the
clutch disc hub by rotating the tran sm ission com ­
panion flange o r output yoke. M ove the tran sm ission
forw ard , guiding the main d riv e g e a r shaft into the
clutch disc splines.
IMPORTANT:
A v o id springing the clutch when
the tran sm ission is being in stalled to the engine.
Do not fo rc e the transm ission into the clutch
disc hub. Do not le t the tran sm ission hang un­
supported in the splined portion o f the clutch
d isc.
Install flyw h eel h ou sing-to-tran sm ission
bolts and w ashers.
torque.
5. If veh icle is equipped with pow er ta k e-o ff, rein sta ll
unit and con trols on transm ission.
6. Connect p ro p e lle r shaft
scrib ed in " P R O P E L L E R
this manual. R em ove tran sm ission jack.
7. Connect parking brake le v e r and con trols (if used).
Adjust brakes as outlined in " P A R K IN G B R A K E "
(Section 5) o f this manual.
8. Install flyw h eel housing
s c rew s firm ly .
9. Reconnect speedom eter cable to adapter at tran s­
m ission , Connect back-up
TCS switch.
10. R ein sta ll shift controls on tran sm ission.
NOTE:
On ve h ic le equipped with 3-speed tran s­
m ission , reconnect shift le v e r s to transm ission
side c o ver.
On veh icle equipped with 4 - speed new p rocess
tran sm ission p e rfo rm
tran sm ission into neutral, install transm ission
c o v e r and g ea rsh ift le v e r , transm ission flo o r
pan c o v e r and flo o r mat.
On veh icle equipped
tran sm ission, install g ea rsh ift le v e r using T o o l
J-8109 as shown in F igu re 2C.
fir m ly and rotate clock w ise to install g earsh ift
le v e r . Install tran sm ission flo o r pan cover and
flo o r mat.
11. If other equipment (exhaust pipe, support brackets,
etc.) was rem oved, rein sta ll these parts.
12. R e fill tran sm ission with lubricant recom m ended in
LU B R IC A T IO N (Section 0) o f this manual.
13. If n ecessary, adjust clutch o r transm ission control
linkage to achieve p ro p er tran sm ission operation.

3 or 4 Speed Transmissions
1. R em ove attaching s c rew s fro m tra n s fe r case shift
le v e r boot re ta in e r and rem ove retain er.
2. R em ove flo o r mat o r carpeting fro m com partment.
3. On flo o r shift m odels, rem ove attaching screw s from
tran sm ission shift le v e r boot reta in er.
and reta in er up le v e r and rem ove tran sm ission shift
le v e r using T o o l J-8109 as shown in F igu re 2C.

duct.
NOTE:
On m odels equipped with a center con­
sole, rem ove console b efo re proceeding to next
step.
5. Rem ove transm ission flo o r co ver attaching screw s
and cover. Rotate co v e r approxim ately 90° to clea r
tra n sfer case shift le v e r while liftin g co ver fro m
veh icle.
NOTE:
Shift tra n sfer case into neutral position
to in crease clearance o f shift le v e r in flo o r
c o v e r opening.
6. Rem ove tra n sfer case shift le v e r using T o o l J-8109.
NOTE:
M odify T o o l J-8109 by rem oving handle
(F ig . 3C) to provide su fficient clearance fo r tool
to rotate when unlocking le v e r.
7. On flo o r shift m odels, disconnect back-up lamp w ir ­
de­
ing from switch and rem o ve attaching clam p fro m top
co ver bolt.
8. R aise and support veh icle on hoist. Support engine
with suitable flo o r
transm ission a ssem b lies.
9. Disconnect speedom eter cable from tra n sfer case.

On column shift m odels, disconnect back-up lamp
switch w irin g and control rods from shift le v e r s .
Disconnect TCS switch.
10. Disconnect prop shaft at rea r o f tra n sfer case and
tie up away from w ork area.
11. Disconnect front prop shaft from tra n sfer case and
tie up away from w ork area.
12. Open lock tabs and rem ove transm ission mount-to-
fram e cro ssm em b er bolts.

13. Support transm ission and tran sfer case assem bly
with suitable flo o r stand.
14. Rem ove fram e to cro ssm em b er bolts and rem ove
crossm em b er fro m veh icle. Rotate cro ssm em b er to
clea r fra m e ra ils .
