9. R em ove engine ground strap and battery cable sup­
p ort
clip
if
attached
housing.
10. If v e h icle
is equipped with power ta k e-off, rem ove
unit and con trols fro m transm ission. P la c e p ro te c ­
tiv e co verin g o v e r opening.
11. P osition a suitable d olly o r jack under veh icle and
adjust to c a r ry weight o f transm ission.
NOTE:
On v eh icles which have the re a r engine
mountings attached to the clutch housing (except
m odels
equipped
with " A p ro n "
housing), position a suitable dolly jack under the
flyw h eel housing and adjust to c a rry the weight
o f
the
engine.
R em ove
12. R em ove bolts attaching transm ission to rea r c r o s s ­
m em ber support b rackets (when used).
13. V isu ally inspect to determ ine
lin es o r brackets must be rem oved to p erm it r e ­
m oval o f the transm ission.
14. R em ove
clutch housing-to-engine flyw heel housing
mounting bolts, except on m odels with " A p r o n " type
flyw h eel housing.
NOTE:
On m odels equipped with " A p ro n " type
flyw h eel housing,
rem o ve flyw heel housing pan
and tra n s m issio n -to -flyw h eel housing mounting
bolts.
Be sure to support the clutch relea se
bearin g and support assem bly during rem oval
o f the tran sm ission from the flyw heel housing.
T h is w ill prevent the bearing and support a s ­
sem bly fro m fa llin t-ou t o f the flyw h eel housing
when the tran sm ission is rem oved.
15. M ove the tran sm ission assem bly straight away from
the engine, using ca re to keep the transm ission main
d riv e gea r shaft in alignm ent with the clutch disc
hub.
IMPORTANT:
When
sion, do not allow weight o f the transm ission to
hang on clutch disc hub, as disc w ill becom e
d istorted,
serio u sly affectin g clutch operation.
16. When tran sm ission is fre e fro m engine, lo w er the
tran sm ission

Installation
1. Apply a light coating o f High T em p eratu re G rease
to the main d riv e gea r bearing reta in er and splined
cable

ponents during assem bly.
2. Shift the transm ission into high gear.
3. Mount tran sm ission on dolly o r jack and m ove into
position under the veh icle.
NOTE:
On m odels equipped with " A p r o n " type
flyw heel
housing,
position
bearin g and support assem bly inside the fly ­
wheel housing. Be sure the clutch fork p ro p erly
engages the clutch re le a s e bearing.
4. A lig n the transm ission main d rive gea r shaft with
the
clutch
disc hub by rotating the transm ission
companion flange.
M ove the transm ission forw ard,
guiding the main d riv e gear shaft into the clutch disc
splines.
A void springing the clutch when
IM P O R T A N T :
the tran sm ission is being installed to the engine.
Do not fo rce the tran sm ission into clutch disc
splines.
Do not let transm ission drop o r hang
unsupported in the splined hub of the clutch disc.
5. Install
clutch
housing-to-engine
mounting
bolts
and
equipped
with
" A p r o n "
Tighten bolts to 25 to 30 ft. lbs.
6. On veh icles equipped with " A p r o n "
housing,
install
tra n sm issio n -to-flyw h eel
mounting bolts and lock washers. Tighten bolts to
60 to 65 ft. lbs.
7. If the re a r engine mounts w ere rem oved, rein sta ll
the
mounts
as
co vered
(Section 6) o f this manual.

8. Install bolts attaching transm ission to re a r c r o s s ­
m em ber support (when used).

9. If veh icle is equipped with pow er ta k e-o ff, rein stall
unit and controls on transm ission.
10. Install engine ground strap and battery cable sup­
port
clip,

attached
housing.
11. Connect
p ro p e lle r
shaft
scribed in " P R O P E L L E R
this manual.
12. Connect parking brake le v e r and controls (if used).
Adjust
brake
as outlined in " P A R K IN G B R A K E "
(Section 5) o f this manual.
13. Reconnect clutch control linkage.
14. C o n n e c t
speedom eter
transm ission.
15. If other equipment (exhaust pipe, support brackets,
etc.) was rem oved, rein sta ll these parts.
16. Shift the tran sm ission into " N E U T R A L " . On m odels
with conventional gea rsh ift le v e r, rein sta ll gearsh ift
le v e r and control tow er assem bly. Tighten bolts on
Spicer
transm ission to 40 to 50 ft. lbs.
