Ball Joint Adjustm ent
Fron t axle b all joint adjustment is g en era lly n ecessary
only when there is e x c e s s iv e play in steerin g, irre g u la r
w ea r on tire s o r p ersisten t loosening o f the tie rod.
1. R aise veh icle on hoist then place jack stands just
inside o f front springs.
2. Disconnect connecting rod and tie rod to allow in­
dependent m ovem ent of each steerin g knuckle.
3. A t top o f knuckle, apply torque wrench to one of the
ste e rin g
arm s
a t t a c h i n g
torque n ecessary to turn the steerin g knuckle. (See
F igu re 44).
Maxim um torque should be:
15 ft. lb s ...........................................................A x le 44-5B
NOTE:
Knuckle should turn sm oothly through
turning arc but have no v e r tic a l end play.

Removal (Figure 45 )
1. Turn actuator le v e r to set hub to " L O C K " position
(fig . 46) and ra ise v e h icle on hoist.

IMPORTANT:
Tem perature w ill a ffe c t turning
torque considerably.
5. If
torque
is too low on axle 44-5B, p e rfo rm the
follow in g:
a. Rem ove upper ball stud locknut and co tter pin.
b.
Torque b all stud adjusting s le e v e to 50 ft. lb.
c. R ein stall locknut and new co tter pin.
d. Recheck starting torque n ecessary to turn the
knuckle. If there is s till excessive play, retorque
b all stud adjusting sleeve to 60 ft. lbs. befo re
taking furth er steps to c o r re c t condition.
NOTE:
If Specifications on torque of steerin g
knuckle
on
turning
requ ired parts o r make n ecessary adjustments.

2. Rem ove six retaining plate bolts and rem o ve retain ­
ing plate actuating knob and " O " ring.
3. Rem ove internal snap ring, outer clutch retaining
ring and actuating cam body.
4. R elie v e p ressu re on the axle shaft snap ring and r e ­
m ove snap ring.
5. Rem ove the axle shaft sleeve and clutch ring a s ­
sem bly and inner clutch ring and bushing assem bly.
6. Rem ove p ressu re spring and spring reta in er plate.
Disassembly
1. Rem ove actuator knob and " O " ring fro m retaining
plate,
discard
" O "
ring and replace with a new
" O " ring during assem bly.
2. Slide inner clutch rin g and bushing assem bly fro m
axle sleeve and clutch ring assem bly.
