contact fa c e s on flange plate, using fine em ery cloth.
Installation (Fig. 3 8 )
C A UTIO N:
Make certain to in stall recom m end­
ed shoe and lining a ssem b lies. O th erw ise, s e -
ious

1. Inspect new linings and make certain there a re no
nicks o r burrs o r bonding m a teria l on shoe edge
w here contact is made with brake flange plate o r on
any o f the contact su rfaces.
NOTE:
Keep hands clean while handling brake
shoes.
Do not p e rm it o il o r gre a s e to com e in
contact with linings.
2. If working on re a r b rakes, lu bricate parking brake
cable.
3. On re a r brakes only, lubricate fulcrum end o f p a rk ­
ing brake le v e r and the bolt with brake lube, then
attach
le v e r
to secondary shoe with bolt, spring
w asher, lock w asher and nut. Make sure that le v e r
m oves fre e ly .
4. B e fo re in stallation, make certain the adjusting screw
is clean and lu bricated p ro p e rly .
NOTE:
L oose adjustment m ay occu r fro m an
adjusting s c re w that is not p ro p e rly operating.
If the lubrication in the adjusting s c re w o f a s ­
sem bly is contaminated o r d estroyed, the ad­
justing sc re w should be thoroughly cleaned and
lubricated.
5. Connect brake shoes together with adjusting sc rew
sprin g, then place
adjusting screw , socket and nut
in position.
C A U TIO N :
Make
sure
s c re w is used (le ft hand o r right hand). The star
w heel
should
only be installed with the star
w heel n earest to the secondary shoe and the
adjusting s crew spring in serted to preven t in te r-
fe ren ce with the star w h eel.
6. Install parking brake cable (r e a r only).
7. Secure the p rim a ry brake shoe (sh ort lining faces
fa ilu re
may
occur.

8. Install and secure the actuator assem bly and second­
a ry brake shoe with the hold down pin and spring
using a p a ir o f needle nose p lie r s (on r e a r position
parking brake strut and strut spring).
9. Install guide plate o v e r anchor pin.
10. Install the w ire link.
NOTE:
Do
not
hook
anchor pin stud with the regu lar spring hook
tool.
This may damage the cylin d er boot seals.
Fasten the w ire link to the actuator assem bly
fir s t, and then place o v e r the anchor pin stud by
hand while holding the adjuster assem bly in full
down position.
11. Install actuator return spring.
NOTE:
Do
not
p ry actuator le v e r to in stall
return spring.
Ease it in place using the end o f
a s crew d r iv e r o r other suitable fla t tool.
