CLUTCH FREE PEDAL TRAVEL ADJUSTMENT
(M echanical Linkage)
Only one sim ple adjustment is n ecessary to maintain
clutch e ffic ie n c y and assure long life . This adjustment is
fo r the amount of fr e e
clutch pedal tra v e l b efo re the
throwout bearing contacts the clutch fin g ers . A s clutch
facin gs w ear, the amount of fr e e pedal tra v e l is reduced
and in tim e this w ill resu lt in clutch slippage. T h e refo re,
it is n ecessa ry to adjust pedal at p erio d ic in terva ls to
provid e sufficien t fr e e pedal tra v e l (3 / 4 " - l" ) to p erm it
fu ll engagem ent of the clutch.
1. D isconnect clutch fo rk return spring at fork.
NOTE:
On
CG
500
equipped with 6 -cylin d er D ie s e l engines, loosen
adjusting nuts on v e r t ic a l rod (F ig . 1). Adjust
nuts to e ffe c tiv e ly shorten rod length until there
is at least 3 / 8 "-l/ 2 " clearan ce between clutch
interm ediate le v e r and o il filt e r (fig. 15).

2. Loosen nut
(fig . 6) and back off from s w iv e l ap­
pro x im a tely 1/2 inch.
3. Hold
clutch
fo rk
push rod against fo rk to m ove
throwout bearin g against clutch fin gers (push rod w ill
slid e through sw iv e l at cro ss -sh a ft).
4. Adjust nut " B " to obtain approxim ately 3/16" to 1/4"
clearan ce between nut " B " and sw ivel.
5. R elea se push rod, connect return spring and tighten
nut
" A"
to lock s w iv e l against nut " B" .
6. Check fr e e pedal clearan ce at pedal (3/4" to 1" is
p ro p er clearan ce). Readjust if necessary.
INSUFFICIENT CLUTCH RELEASE
W here com plaints of fir s t o r r e v e r s e gear clash due to
insu fficien t clutch re le a s e are encountered, the follow in g
may be helpful.
Cut off the existin g clutch pedal stop

bumper to a height of 3/8". Since shortening the bumper
in crea ses the lash and not the usable stroke, the lash
must be reduced to sp ecification s in o rd e r to gain the
additional stroke benefit.
