2. Check clutch retra ctin g springs fo r p rop er retention
of p ressu re plate to diaphragm spring, rep la ce if
n ecessary.
T his can be done without rem ovin g clutch
fro m veh icle.
3. If Steps 1 and 2 do not cure trouble, check pressu re
plate lift with dial indicator (fig .
a. W ith p rop er linkage adjustment (and lash), z e ro
indicator
with clutch fu lly engaged (pedal up).
b. M easure p res su re plate lift at 3 strap bolt p o s i­
tions with fu ll pedal tra v el.
CLUTCH ASSEMBLY
R em oval From Vehicle
1. R em ove tran sm ission as outlined in "T ra n s m is s io n
Section."
2. Disconnect slave cylin d er fro m clutch fork.
3. R em ove
clutch

4. R em ove clutch fo rk by p ressin g it away fro m its ball
mounting with a s c re w d riv e r, until the fo rk snaps
loose fro m the b all or rem ove b all stud fro m re a r of
clutch housing.
NOTE:
The re ta in e r m ay be rem oved fro m the
fo rk by p rying out with a sm all s c re w d riv e r.
5. Install T o o l J-5824 to support the clutch assem bly
during rem oval.
6. Loosen the clutch attaching bolts one turn at a tim e
to
p revent
distortion
phragm spring is relea sed .
7. R em ove clutch p ilot tool and rem ove clutch assem bly
fro m veh icle.
Installation to Vehicle
1. Install the p ressu re plate in the c o v e r assem bly lin ­
ing up the notch m ark on pressu re plate with notch
m ark on flange of co ver.
2. Install p ressu re plate retra c tin g springs and d rive
strap to p ressu re plate bolts and lockw ashers and
tighten to 11 ft. lbs. torque. The clutch is now ready
to be in stalled.

Use 5/8" thick board in place of flo o r
mat to give a positive stop.
A ll three readings should be within .010" and

bolts tight), p ry co ver, away fro m flyw h eel, and

Total lift readings should be as follow s:
L -6 230
.065 to .075
HD 11"
.065 to .085
Make sure p rop er pedal lash adjustment is made be­
fo r e checking.
NOTE:
E x ce ss iv ely high readings indicate that
the
diaphragm
spring is being o v e r stres s ed
which may eventually cause loss of load and
resu lt in slippage.
If above m easures fa il to c o r r e c t the trouble, check
driven disc with clutch pedal depressed (it should spin
fr e e ly
with
tran sm ission
trouble may be:
1. M isalignm ent between pilot bushing in crankshaft and
clutch housing.
2. Faulty clutch pilot bushing.
3. Faulty driven disc.
4. Im proper sla ve cylin der adjustment.
