3. F ile peened end o f cen ter b olt and rem ove cen ter
b olt nut. Open v is e s low ly to allow spring assem bly
to expand.
4. Replace sprin g le a f as requ ired , also rep lace any d e­
fe c tiv e spring le a f in s erts at this tim e.
5. A lig n cen ter h oles in sprin g by means o f a d rift and
com p ress spring le a v e s in a v is e .
6. R em ove d r ift fr o m cen ter hole and in sta ll a new cen ­
te r b o lt- p e e n bolt to retain nut.
7. A lign spring le a v e s by tapping with ham m er, then
bend spring c lip s into p lace.
NOTE:
Spring c lip s should be tightened s u ffi­
cien tly
to
maintain
enough to bind spring action.
Installation
NOTE:
A ll spring attachments, including cen ter
b olts, a re im portant attaching p arts in that they
could a ffe c t the p erform a n ce o f v ita l components
and system s, and/or could resu lt in m a jor r e ­
p a ir expense.
They must be rep laced with parts
o f the same p a rt numbers o r with equivalent
p arts i f replacem ent becom es n ecessa ry . Do not
use replacem en t p arts o f le s s e r quality o r sub­
stitute design.
Torqu e valu es must be used as
s p e c ifie d during rea ssem b ly to assure p ro p er
retention o f these p arts.
1. P osition spring assem b ly under ve h ic le so that head
o f cen ter b olt is indexed in axle spring seat.
2. L o o s e ly in sta ll s p rin g -to -a x le " U " bolts.
3. P o sitio n spring to fron t and r e a r hangers, in stall eye
bolts and lo o s e ly in sta ll eye bolt nuts.
4. L o w e r v e h ic le to flo o r and bounce fron t o f veh icle
s e v e r a l tim es to allow bushings to cen ter in hangers.
Then torque a ll sp rin g bolts to sp ecification s.
5. L o w e r v e h icle on hoist.

Removal
1. R aise ve h ic le on hoist to take w eight o ff spring.
D isconnect shock a b sorb er fr o m lo w e r bracket.
2. Support I-b eam , disconnect
sp acers, and allow to drop.
and set aside fo r rein stallation .

3. Rem ove spring fron t eye pivot pin nut and withdraw
pivot pin.
4. Drop spring and pull out o f r e a r hanger.

Removal (W ith Spring on Vehicle)
1. R aise v eh icle on h oist to take weight o ff sprin g and
rem ove spring eye nut and bolt.
2. R aise v e h ic le fu rth er until spring eye c le a rs hanger.
3. Using J-21978-1 r e m o v e r adapter, J-21058 nut and
screw , and J-21830-4, 7 r e c e iv e r and brid ge rem ove
bushing fro m spring eye (fig . 33).
