FRONT SUSPENSION 3-6
WHEEL HUBS, BEARINGS, DRUMS
Removal
1. R aise ve h ic le on hoist and rem ove wheel and tire
assem bly.
R em ove dust cap fro m
withdraw c o tter pin.
2. Rem ove hub and drum assem bly.
NOTE:
In som e cases it may be n ecessa ry to
back o ff the brake adjustment because of scored
drums o r badly worn linings holding drum on.
3. R em ove outer bearin g fro m hub. The inner bearing
w ill rem ain in the hub and may be rem oved by prying
out the inner gre a se seal.
4. Wash a ll parts in cleaning solvent.
Inspection
1. Check a ll bearin gs fo r cracked bearin g cages, worn
o r pitted r o lle r s .
2. Check bearin g r a c e s fo r cracks o r scorin g, check
brake drums fo r out-of-rou nd o r scored condition
and check b earin g outer races fo r loosen ess in hubs.
Repairs
Repla c e m e n t o f Bearing Cups
1. Using ste e l bar stock 3/8" x 3/8" in c ro s s section,
make p ress-o u t tools shown in F igu re 11.
2. P la ce appropriate tool behind bearin g cup, indexing
tool in provid ed notches, and p re s s out cup with
a rb or p ress.
3. In stall new inner and outer cups using d r iv e r handle
J-8092 (fig . 12) and suitable cup in s ta lle rs fo r d if­
fere n t
veh icle

1. Brake drum is retained to hub by hub bolts and wheel
nuts. R em ove drum and d iscard gasket (if presen t).
2. If n ecessary to rep la ce hub bolts, p re s s out old bolts
and p re s s new b olts in making sure bolt heads seat
squ arely on hub flange (fig . 13).

3. P la ce brake drum and a new gasket o v e r hub bolts
when installing hub to wheel spindle.

1. Rem ove two fla t head s crew s secu rin g drum to wheel
hub and rem ove drum and gasket. D iscard gasket.
2. If n ecessa ry to rep lace hub bolts, p res s bolts out o f
hub and rem ove d e fle c to r and d e fle cto r gasket.
3. P la c e new d eflec to r gasket on hub.
4. P r e s s new bolts into hub (fig . 13).
5. P la ce brake drum on hub retain with the two fla t
head screw s.

1. Rem ove brake drum -to-hub bolts and lock w ashers.
Separate d e flector, gasket and brake drum fro m hub.
2. If n ecessa ry to rep lace hub bolts, p re s s out old bolts
and p res s in new s erra ted bolts, making sure head is
square with hub flange and s ecu rely seated.
3. P la ce drum o v e r hub. In stall drum to hub bolts and
lock w ashers and tighten secu rely.

1. Brake drum is eith er bolted o r screw ed to hub d e ­
pending on type of wheel used. In eith er case, r e ­
m ove screw s o r bolts and separate hub and drum.
2. If n ecessary to rep lace hub bolts, p re s s out old bolts
and p re s s new serra ted bolts into position, making
sure bolt head is square with hub flange and secu rely
seated. Install bolts o r s crew s into hub and tighten
secu rely.
Installation
1. Pack inner and outer wheel bearin gs with re c o m ­
mended grea se (s ee Section 0).
2. P la ce inner bearing in hub and in sta ll new seal a s ­
sem bly (o r a ssem b lies), tapping into place with soft
ham m er.
3. Position hub on spindle and in sta ll outer bearing,
p ressin g it fir m ly into position in hub.
4. Adjust wheel bearings as outlined under W heel B e a r­
ings-A dju st, then low er veh icle on hoist.
