FRONT SUSPENSION 3-24
Inspection
1. Wash a ll p arts in solven t and a ir dry.
2. Inspect a ll parts fo r w ear, cracks o r broken teeth.
3. Replace a ll " O " rin gs during assem bly.
Assembly

1. P la ce new
rin g sea l on actuator knob. Apply
lu bri-p late to " 0 " ring and place actuator knob in
retaining plate.
Installation
A ll parts should be lubricated during assem bly to p r e ­
vent deterio ratio n b e fo re

axle shaft sle ev e and clutch rin g assem bly and in ­
sta ll as an assem bly onto the axle shaft. P r e s s in on
assem bly and in stall axle shaft snap ring.
NOTE:
Install 7/16 x 20 bolt in axle shaft end
and pull outward on axle shaft to aid in in stalling
snap rings.
4. Install actuating cam body (cam s facing outward),
outer clutch retaining ring and internal snap ring.
5. Install " O "
ring on retaining plate and in sta ll a c ­
tuating knob and retaining plate.
NOTE:
In stall a c t u a t i n g
" L O C K " p osition — g ro o ve s in knob must fit into
actuator cam body.

7. Turn knob to " F R E E " position to check fo r prop er
operation.

Removal (Figure 47 )
1. P la ce veh icle on hoist and support on fram e to allow
fron t suspension to hang fr e e .

2. Turn hub key knob to the " F R E E " position.
3. Rem ove alien head bolts secu rin g the reta in er cap
assem bly to the wheel hub.
4. P u ll o ff the hub cap assem bly and gasket; also r e ­
m ove e x te r io r s le e v e extension housing and gasket.

a] Turn hub key knob to locked position.
b. D rive out key knob reta in er r o ll pin.
c. Rem ove outer clutch g e a r assem bly.
d. Rem ove lock ring and rem ove slotted adjustment
s le e v e .
e. R em ove spring.
f . Rem ove lock ring securing the p lastic key knob to
the hub reta in er cap.
g. Rem ove " O " ring fro m the plastic hub key knob.
5. Rem ove snap ring fro m end o f axle shaft.
6. Pull internal clutch g e a r and c o lla r.
7. Rem ove
outer

8. Rem ove inner adjusting nut with J-6893.
9. R em ove hub assem bly fro m spindle.
10. R em ove outer bearin g and race assem bly.
11. Rem ove seal and inner bearing and race assem bly.
12. R em ove inner and outer hub bearin g cups with brass
d rift.
Inspection
1. D iscard a ll seals, gaskets and " O " rin gs.
2. Wash a ll parts in solvent and a ir dry.
3. Inspect a ll parts fo r w ear, cracks fo r broken teeth
and rep lace as n ecessary.
4. Replace a ll sea ls gaskets and " O " rings.
Installation
NOTE:
L u bricate
during installation and a s ­
sem bly of parts to assure lon ger life , quiet and
e a s ie r operation and to p reven t d eteriora tion b e ­
fo r e the unit is put into s e rv ic e .
1. In stall hub housing inner and outer cups with special
T o o l J-6368 and J-23448 resp.
2. Install inner bearin g race assem bly and seal into the
wheel hub.
NOTE:
G rease
seals and pack cavity behind
seals with recom m ended wheel b earin g g rea se.
3. Install outer bearing race assem bly to hub.
4. Install hub and outer wheel b earin g cone to spindle.
5. Torque inner adjusting nut (protruding pin should be
facing outward) with sp ecial T o o l J-6893 with new
torque

6. Back o ff inner adjusting nut and retighten to 30-40
ft. lbs. while hub is being rotated.
