F ig . 15—A u x ilia r y S pring (Series 40 , 50 and 60)
1. Straighten tabs on rebound stop pin reta in ers at front
and re a r hangers and rem ove reta in er b olts and r e ­
bound pins.
2. Install a " C " clam p on radius le a f to re lie v e load on
spring eye bolt. R em ove eye bolt and slow ly relea se
tension on radius le a f.
3. R em ove nuts from " U " bolts, rem ove " U " b olts and
" U " bolt spacer plate fro m spring.
NOTE:
A s an aid in rein sta llin g spring, note
position o f caster
shim placed between spring
assem bly and axle housing. R ecord position as
"th ic k edge fo r w a r d " o r "th in edge fo r w a rd '' as
the position dictates.
4. R em ove
spring and ca ster shim from spring seat
and fro m beneath the veh icle.
5. Inspect s p rin g --re p la c e bushing, rep a ir or replace
spring unit as outlined in this section.

Installation
1. Install spring ca ster shim making sure shim is po­
sitioned so that it correspon ds to shim on opposite
side and that it is as noted in step 3 o f " R e m o v a l"
procedures.
2. P la ce spring on shim with center bolt indexed in pad
center hole and spring ends positioned in hangers.
3. Install " U " bolt spacer o v e r cen ter bolt on top le a f
o f spring.
4. Seat " U " bolt in spacer and secure spring to axle by
installing anchor plate and nuts on " U " bolts. Torqu e
nuts altern ately and evenly to specification s.
5. L o w e r fram e
so that ends o f spring enters hanger
and that top o f spring touches cam surface o f hanger.
C om press radius le a f with a " C " clam p until pivot
bushing and hanger holes a re aligned.

6. Rem ove " C " clamp from radius lea f, lo w e r veh icle
and install rebound pins at front and re a r hangers.
Install rebound pin locks, secure locks with bolts and
bend tab o f lock o v e r fla t o f retaining bolt.
Spring Leaf
Replacement
1. P la ce spring assem bly in a bench mounted vise and
rem ove spring clip s by bending tabs o r i f so equipped
rem ove bolts and spacer o f upper portion o f clips.
2. Position spring in v is e jaw s, com pressin g lea ves at
center and adjacent to center bolt.

F ile peened end o f center bolt and rem ove nut. Open
vise
slow ly
to allow
4. W ire brush and clean spring lea ves.

5. A lig n center holes in spring lea ves by means o f a
long d rift and com press spring le a v e s in a vise.
6. Rem ove d rift fro m
center hole and in stall a new
center b o lt--p een bolt to retain nut.
7. A lig n
spring le a v e s by tapping with ham m er, then
bend
spring clip s into place o r install b olts and
spacer i f so equipped.
NOTE:
Spring clip s should be bent su fficien tly
to maintain alignm ent, but not tight enough to
bind spring action.
