CAPACITY (SALISBURY-TYPE) AXLES
A x le Assembly
Construction o f the axle assem b ly is such that s e rv ic e
operation s may be p erfo rm ed with the housing installed in
the veh icle o r with the housing installed in a holding fix ­
tu re.
The follow in g rem ova l and installation procedure
is n ecessary only when the housing re q u ire s replacem ent.
NOTE:
A ll A x le attachments a re im portant a t­
taching parts in that they could a ffect the p e r fo r ­
mance o f vital components and system s, and/or
could resu lt in m ajor re p a ir expense. They must
be replaced with parts o f the same part numbers
o r with equivalent parts i f replacem ent becom es
n ecessary.

assem b ly to assure p ro p er retention of these
parts.
Removal
1. R aise veh icle on hoist.
2. Support
r e a r
axle
assem bly
d evice,
so that tension is r e lie v e d in springs, tie
rod, and shock ab sorb ers.
3. On v e h ic le s so equipped, disconnect tie rod at axle
housing bracket o r at d iffe re n tia l c a r r ie r .
4. R em ove trunnion bearin g " U " bolts from the axle
companion
flange,
separate trunnion from
p osition
p r o p e lle r
shaft to one side and tie
fram e side ra il.
NOTE:
Secure trunion b earin gs caps to trun­
nion, using masking tape or a la rg e rubber band,
to preven t lo ss of b earings.
5. D isconnect
shock
a b sorb ers
points and position out o f the way.
6. Disconnect axle vent hose fro m vent connector and
position vent hose to one side.
7. Disconnect hydraulic brake hose at connector on axle
housing.
R em ove brake drum, disconnect parking
brake cable at actuating le v e r s and at flange plate.

8. On ve h ic les so equipped, check c o il springs to make
sure that they are com pressed; then on all veh icles,
rem o ve axle " U " bolt nuts,
clamp plates.

installation
1. P o sitio n axle assem b ly under veh icle and align with
springs o r control a rm s as applicable.
2. Install spacer, clam p plate and " U" bolts to axle a s ­
sem bly, lo o sely install retaining nuts to " U" bolts.
3. P ositio n shock ab sorb ers in lo w e r attachment b rack­
ets and lo o sely install nut to retain shock.
4. Connect axle vent hose to vent connector at c a r r ie r .
5. Connect hydraulic brake hose to connector on axle
housing, connect parking brake cable to actuating
le v e r s .
Install brake drum and wheel and tire a s ­

sem b ly --b le ed brakes and adjust parking brake as
outlined in applicable portion o f Section 5.
6. R eassem ble the p ro p e lle r shaft to companion flange,
making sure that bearing caps a re indexed in flange
seat. Install the torque bearing cap retaining nuts to
specification s.
7. P osition v e h icle so that weight is placed on suspen­
sion
c o m p o n e n t s
sp ecification s.
8. L o w e r veh icle and rem ove fro m hoist.
A xle Vent
Replacement
The axle vent system consists o f the vent connector,
vent hose and associated attaching parts. When replacin g
vent hose make sure that it is routed along o rigin a l path
in such a manner that the hose is fr e e fro m kinks or
binds that would r e s tr ic t a ir flow . In rep la cin g the vent
connector;
p ry old connector from c a r r ie r , being sure
that entire connector is rem oved. Tap new connector into
c a r r ie r with a so ft-fa ced ham m er, p rick punch around
edge
o f
hole to insure fit o f new connector (fig. 41).

Removal (Except Dana Axles)
1. R aise veh icle on hoist. R em ove wheel and tir e a s ­
sem bly and brake drum.

3. Loosen c a r r ie r c o v e r - t o - c a r r ie r bolts sligh tly to a l­
low lubricant to drain from c a r r ie r . R em ove c a r r ie r
co v er and gasket.
4. R em ove the d ifferen tia l pinion shaft lo ck screw and
the d ifferen tia l pinion shaft (fig.
5. Push

6. R em ove axle shaft fro m housing, being carefu l not to
damage o il seal at end o f housing.
