PERIODIC LO W BAND ADJUSTMENT (Fig. IP G )
Low band adjustment should be p e rio d ic a lly p erfo rm ed
at fir s t tran sm ission flu id change, or sooner, as nec­

1. R aise veh icle and p lace s e le c to r le v e r in neutral.
2. Rem ove p ro tective cap fro m transm ission adjusting
screw .
3. On som e m odels: T o gain clearance between under­
body and transm ission, it m ay be n ecessary to r e ­
m ove
re a r
mound
bolts fro m
m ove tran sm ission s ligh tly toward p assenger side of
veh icle.
4. Loosen adjusting sc rew locknut 1/4 turn and hold in
this position with wrench.
5. Using Special T o o l J - 21848 adjust band to 70 in. lbs.
and back off fou r (4) com plete turns fo r a band which
has been in operation fo r 6,000 m iles or m ore, or
three (3) turns fo r one in use le s s than 6,000 m iles.
CAUTIO N:
Be_ sure to hold the adjusting screw
locknut at 1/4 turn loose with a wrench during
the adjusting procedure.

6. Tighten
the
adjusting
torque.

The amount o f b a c k -o ff is not an
approxim ate figu re, it must be exact.
M A N U A L SHIFT LINKAGE CHECK & ADJUST
1. The shift tube and le v e r assem bly must be fr e e in the
mast jacket. See Section 9 fo r alignment of steerin g
column assem bly if n ecessa ry.
2. T o check fo r p ro p er shift linkage adjustment, lift the
tran sm ission s e le c to r

wheel. A llow the s e le c to r le v e r to be positioned in
d riv e (D) by the transm ission detent.
NOTE:
Do not use the indicator pointer as a
referen ce to position the s e le c to r le v e r . When
p e rfo rm in g linkage adjustment, pointer is ad­
justed last.
3. R elea se the s e le c to r le v e r .
hibited from engaging low range unless the le v e r is
lifted.
4. L ift the s e le c to r le v e r towards the s tee rin g wheel,
and allow the le v e r to be positioned in neutral (N ) by
the transm ission detent.
5. R elease the s e le c to r le v e r . The le v e r should now be
inhibited fro m
le v e r is lifted.
6. A p ro p e rly adjusted linkage w ill preven t the s elec to r
le v e r fro m
m oving beyond both the neutral detent,
and the d rive detent unless the le v e r is lifted to pass
ov er the m echanical stop in the s teerin g column.
7. In the event that an adjustment is required, place the
s e le c to r le v e r in d riv e (D) position as determ ined by
the transm ission detent. See Steps 2 and 3.
8. Loosen
the adjustment s w iv e l at the mast jacket
le v e r,
and rotate the transm ission le v e r so that it
contacts

9. Tighten the sw iv el and recheck the adjustment. See
Steps 2 and 6.
10. Readjust indicator needle if n ecessary to a gree with
the
transm ission detent positions.
11. Readjust neutral safety switch if n ecessary to p ro ­
vide
the c o rr e c t relationship to the transm ission
detent positions. See Section 12.
