3. R aise I-b eam with c a ster shims in position, index
spring cen ter bolt into I-b eam sprin g seat and in stall
" \J"
bolts, sp acers and nuts. Torque " U " bolt nuts
120 lb. ft. Connect shock a b sorb er.

and kingpin may be rem oved and
s e rv ic e d without rem ovin g the axle assem bly fro m the
v eh ic le .
Removal
1. R aise v e h icle on hoist and rem ove wheel and tire and
fron t hub and b earin g assem bly as outlined under
" F ron t Hubs and D ru m s' R e m o v a l" .
2. Rem ove bolts retaining brake backing plate to s t e e r ­
ing knuckle and withdraw plate. Attach backing plate
to fra m e o r body to preven t damage to brake hoses.
3. Swing s teerin g and tie rod arm out o f w ork area.

4. a. Rem ove upper and lo w e r dust caps.
b. Rem ove kingpin lockpin nut and pull out lockpin.
c.
Tap kingpin out fro m bottom and withdraw s t e e r ­
ing knuckle, shim, and thrust b earin g pack.

a. Rem ove upper dust cap and lo w er expansion plug
lock ring.
b. Rem ove
kingpin upper cotter pin and nut.
11,000 lb. axle rem ove metal spacer under king­
pin nut.
c. D rive kingpin downward out o f axle and knuckle.
W ithdraw
ste erin g knuckle, thrust b earin g and
spacer w ashers.
d. Rem ove upper kingpin bushing. This bushing is a
.0 01 "-.003" fit and may be pushed out by hand.
Inspection
1. Wash a ll p arts in solvent and a ir dry.
2. Inspect s teerin g knuckle fo r distortion, cracks o r
breaks.

3. Examine thrust bearin gs o r w ashers fo r ex c essive
w ear o r scorin g.
4. Examine s teerin g knuckle bushings and kingpin fo r
e x c essive w ear o r scorin g.
Repairs
Kin gpin
I f kingpin is damaged, it must be replaced during r e a s ­
sem bly o f steerin g knuckle.
