Maintenance
and
adjustments fo r the Eaton s in g le-
speed axle are p e rfo rm e d the same as those outlined fo r
A xle Assem bly
S e rvice operations on the axle may be p e rfo rm e d with­
out rem oving the com plete axle assem bly fro m the ve h i­
cle.
Th ere may be occasions, how ever, when it w ill be
necessary to rem ove the com plete assem bly as a result
o f co llision o r other damage resulting in distortion o f the
axle housing.
The fo llo w in g axle assem bly rem oval, is to
be
used
only
when
replacem ent
necessary.
NOTE:
A ll axle attachments are im portant at­
taching parts in that they could a ffect the p e r ­
form ance
o f
v ita l
components
and/or could resu lt in m ajor rep a ir expense.
They must be rep laced with parts o f the same
part numbers o r with equivalent parts i f r e ­
placem ent
becom es
replacem ent p arts o f le s s e r quality o r substitute
design.
Torque values must be used as sp ecified
during rea ssem b ly to assure p rop er retention of
these parts.
Removal
1. Loosen the r e a r w heel stud nuts, then ra ise the re a r
o f the veh icle
enough to rem ove the load fro m the
re a r springs. Support v e h icle with stand jacks under
fram e side ra ils .
2. Disconnect the hydraulic brake hose fro m the brake
pipe at the re a r axle, o r, i f the truck is equipped with
a ir brakes, bleed the system , then disconnect the a ir
brake hose fro m the r e a r brake cham bers.
3. Rem ove the two trunnion bearing
pinion flange and sp lit the re a r u n iversal joint. Swing
the p ro p e lle r shaft to one side and tie it to the fram e
side ra il.

4. R em ove the re a r spring " U " bolts and r o ll the axle
assem bly out from under the truck.

Installation
1. Install the wheels, then r o ll the axle assem bly into
position under the truck.
2. Attach axle to the re a r springs with the " U " bolts.

Tighten the " U " bolt nuts to 215 ft. lbs.
3. Connect p ro p e lle r shaft to the axle, drawing " U "
bolts up to torque specification s.
4. Connect the hydraulic brake hose to the brake pipe on
the re a r axle, then bleed the brakes and check fluid
le v e l in the m aster cylin der. If the truck is equipped
with a ir brakes, connect a ir lin es to the re a r brake
cham bers.
5. L o w e r veh icle to flo o r and tighten re a r wheel nuts.
6. F ill axle to p ro p er le v e l with lubricant.
7. Check brake operation. Inspect fo r a ir o r hydraulic
fluid leaks at brake line fittin gs.
A xle Vent
Replacement
S ervice
replacem ent axle housing assem blies are not
equipped with an axle vent; th erefo re, always make sure
that a new vent assem bly is installed when replacin g the
housing. If axle vent req u ires replacem ent, p ry old vent
fro m housing being sure that entire vent is rem oved.
P r ic k punch around c a r r ie r hole to insure fit o f re p la c e ­
ment vent.
Tap new vent into housing using a soft-faced
ham m er.
Vent should be positioned in housing so that
fla t su rface is toward centerline of d ifferen tia l c a r r ie r
(fig . 77).
A xle Shaft
Removal and Installation
1. Rem ove the axle shaft flange-to-hub retaining nuts.
(R e fe r to F igu re 78).
2. Strike the center o f shaft flange with a lead ham m er
to loosen flange and dowels.
3. Rem ove tapered dowels from
shaft from
housing.

4. Thoroughly clean old gasket m a teria l from wheel hub
and axle shaft flange, and in stall a new gasket o v e r
hub studs and against hub.
5. Install axle shaft so that splines are aligned with d if­
feren tia l side gea r and flange holes index o v e r hub
studs.
6. Install tapered dowel o v e r each hub stud. Install and
tighten stud nuts to specifications.
7. O b serve that clearan ce exists between face of stud
nuts and axle shaft flange. If no clearan ce exists,
this indicates ex cessive w ear at studs, tapered dow­
els, o r flange h oles— replace worn part if n ecessary.
