Removal
C A UTIO N:
When trunnion bearin g
a re rem oved to rem ove the p r o p e lle r shaft, tape
the b earin gs to keep them clean and f r om be­
com ing damaged.
P r o p e lle r shaft guards may
be rem oved , i f n ecessary, by rem ovin g nut at
each end of the guard.
Single or Rear
" U"
R em ove re a r trunnion
p ro p e lle r shaft and pull back to disengage the sleeve at
fron t o f shaft. Rem ove shaft fro m under veh icle.
Front
R em ove four fron t flange nuts at tran sm ission and, if
equipped with interm ediate p r o p e lle r shaft, rem ove the
r e a r trunnion
clam ps. Rem ove nuts and lock wash­
e rs attaching bearin g support to fram e crossm em b er and
pull shaft assem bly fro m veh icle.
Interm ediate or Rear Interm ediate
R em ove the fron t trunnion
support mounting b olt nuts and lock washers. L o w er the
fron t o f the shaft and pull forw a rd to disengage splines at
re a r o f shaft.
R em ove shaft and bearin g support a ssem ­
b ly fro m under veh icle.
Front Interm ediate
R em ove the front and re a r trunnion " 11" clam ps and
the b earin g support mounting bolt nuts and lock w ashers.
L o w e r shaft and bearin g support assem bly fro m veh icle.
Inspection
Wash ends o f p r o p e lle r shaft in cleaning solvent, in ­
spect fo r damage and e x ce ss ive w ear on splines, trun­
nions and bearin gs.
Exam ine s le e ve
re ta in e r fo r damage o r d eterioration .
Disassembly
1. Rem ove trunnion b earin gs fro m p ro p e lle r shaft yoke
as follo w s:
a. Rem ove lock rings fro m yoke and lubrication f i t ­
ting fro m trunnion.
b. Support yoke in a bench vis e .
c. Using soft d r ift and ham m er, d riv e on one trun­
nion b earin g to d riv e opposite b earing fro m yoke.
NOTE:
The b earin g cap cannot be d riven com ­
p le te ly out.
d. Grasp cap in v is e and work out.
e. Support other side o f yoke and d riv e other bearing
cap fro m yoke and rem ove as in step d.
f . Rem ove trunnion fro m p r o p e lle r shaft yoke.
2. If
equipped
with
sliding s le e v e ,
bearin gs fro m
s le e v e yoke in the sam e manner as
above. R em ove seal reta in e r fro m end o f sle e v e and
pull seal and w asher fro m retain er.
3. R em ove b earing support as fo llo w s :
a. Rem ove dust shield, o r , i f equipped with flange,
rem ove c o tter pin and nut and pull flange and d e ­
fle c to r assem bly fro m shaft.

REPLACEMENT
d. Rem ove inner d eflecto r from shaft i f replacem ent
is n ecessary.
Assembly
1. A ssem b le b earin g support as follow s:
a. Install inner d eflecto r on p ro p e lle r shaft, i f r e ­
moved, and p rick punch d e fle c to r at two opposite
points to make sure it is tight on shaft.
b. Pack reta in ers with grea se, as outlined in S ec­
tion 0. In sert a slin g er (i f used) inside one r e ­
tainer and p re s s this reta in er o v e r bearin g outer
race.
c. Start bearin g and slin g er assem bly straigh t on
shaft journal. Support p ro p e lle r shaft and, using
suitable length o f pipe o v e r splined end o f shaft,
p re s s b earin g and inner slin g er against shoulder
on shaft.
d. In stall second s lin g e r on shaft and p re s s second
reta in er o v e r b earin g outer race.
e. Install
dust shield o v e r shaft, sm a ll d iam eter
fir s t and p re s s into position against outer slin g er
o r, i f equipped with flange, in stall flange and d e­
fle c to r a ssem b ly as follow s:
(1) In stall d e fle c to r on flange, i f rem oved, and
p rick punch at two opposite points to make
sure it is tight on flange.
(2) A lig n cen terlin e o f flange yoke with cen ter-
line o f p r o p e lle r shaft yoke and sta rt flange
straigh t on splines o f shaft with end o f flange
against slin g er.
(3) In stall retaining nut and tighten to 160-180
ft. lbs. torque. Install co tter pin.
f . F o rc e rubber cushion onto b earin g and coat out­
side d iam eter o f cushion with brake fluid.

F o rc e bracket onto cushion.
2. A ssem b le trunnion bearings to p ro p e lle r
fo llo w s:
a. On extended life u n iversal join ts when p erfo rm in g
s e rv ic e operations that requ ire d isassem bly of
the u n iversal joint, repack bearings with g rea se
as outlined in Section 0 and replace trunnion a s ­
sem bly dust sea ls.
NOTE:
In
addition
to
make sure the lubricant r e s e r v o ir at the end o f
each trunnion is com p letely fille d with lubricant.
In fillin g these r e s e r v o ir s , pack lubricant into
the hole so as to f i l l fro m the bottom . This w ill
preven t
a ir
pockets
supply o f lubricant.
To replace trunnion dust seal, rem ove the old dust seal
and place new seal on trunnion - cavity o f sea l toward end
o f trunnion - P r e s s sea l onto trunnion ex e rc is in g caution
during installation to preven t sea l distortion and to a s ­
sure p ro p er seating o f seal on trunnion.
NOTE:
If in stallin g seal on sm all s iz e trunnion,
seal in s ta lle r J-21548 should be used (fig . 95).
b. On a ll other u n iversal joints lu bricate trunnion
bearin g r o lle r s and in stall new seal rings.
c. In sert trunnion in p ro p e lle r shaft yoke and p ress
bearings into yoke and o v e r trunnion hubs fa r
enough to in sta ll lock rings.
