4. Install wheel and tir e assem bly.
5. Rem ove chain and tool.

Ball Joint— Inspection
Upper
1. R aise v e h icle on hoist and support on fra m e to allow
control arm s to hang fr e e .
assem bly.
2. Support lo w e r con trol arm with adjustable jackstand
and disconnect upper b a ll stud from steerin g knuckle.
3. R ein sta ll nut on b a ll stud and m easure torque r e ­
quired to rotate stud with torque wrench. L im its are
1-10 lb. ft. If torque is not within these lim its , r e ­
place b a ll joint.
4. If b a ll joint inspection shows no defect, assem ble
upper stud to ste e rin g knuckle and torque 70 lb. ft.
on CP10 m odels,
120 lb. ft. on CP20-30 m odels.
Lower
L o w er b a ll joints a re a loose fit when not connected
to the s teerin g knuckle. W ear may be checked without
disassem bling the b a ll stud, as follow s:
1. Support weight o f con trol arm s at wheel hub and
drum.
2. M easure distance between tip o f b all stud and tip of
grea se fitting below b a ll joint (fig . 18).
3. M ove support to con trol arm to allow wheel hub and
drum to hang fr e e .
M easure distance as in Step 2.
If
the
d ifferen ce in m easurem ents exceeds
(3/32") fo r a ll m odels, b all joint is worn and should
be replaced.
4. L o w e r veh icle on hoist.
Lower Control Arm Assem bly
Removal
1. R aise veh icle on hoist and rem ove spring as outlined
under spring rem oval.
2. R em ove co tter pin fro m lo w e r b all stud and loosen
stud nut until top o f nut is sligh tly above top of the
stud.
3. Install B all Stud R em o ver J-8806 (fig . 19), p osition ­

nut and pilotin g the threaded end o f tool on end o f the
low er ball stud.
Extend bolt fro m T ool J-8806 to
loosen lo w er ball stud in steerin g knuckle. When
stud is loosened,
rem ove tool and nut fro m lo w er
stud.
4. Rem ove control arm .
Repairs
Bushings
1. Rem ove grea se fittings from bushing outer ends and
unscrew
bushings
from
(fig . 20).
