11. SHOE R E L IN E - A 3/4 inch hole is requ ired fo r the
contact plug. If lining is not p r e -d r ille d , locate the
hole by making a paper tem plate o f the shoe table.
Cut hole with a hole saw and de-b u rr the edges. If
lining is to be su rface ground, an assem bled contact
plug m ay be ground even with lining by blocking
automatic adjuster in fu lly extended position. Grind
lining 0.020 to 0.030 inch le s s than standard drum
d iam eter to p rovid e "b r e a k in " clearan ce at lining
ends.
NOTE:
The W agner Type
must be manually adjusted with drum on at a ll
in itia l installations as this type brake does not
autom atically adjust in itia l clearan ce.
Installation (Fig. 5 5 )
1. In stall autom atic adjuster, contact plug flush with
lining su rface:

plug, fro m the underside of shoe, guiding its shank
through the hole in the shoe table and o v e r wedge
guide and w edge. In sert adjuster le v e r pins through
shoe web fro m opposite side, guiding the actuating
(cen ter) pin into the mating hole o f the contact plug
shank.
P la ce wedge w asher o v e r shoulder o f p ivot
pin. Slide " U " hook o f adjuster spring on pin o v e r
contact plug shank.

torsion spring o v e r the pivot pin and pull the spring
hook o v e r the edge o f web. Connect wedge actuating
spring on ra ised hook on the wedge " f o r k . "
r e tra c t the wedge against the le v e r p ivot pin, p r e s s ­
ing upon the contact plug to p e rm it this m ovem ent.
If plug now protru des m ore than 0.005-inch above
lining, clam p shoe in vis e
against the adjuster le v e r and d ress down the plug.
This can be done with a file , taking ca re not to crea te
a " fla t spot" on the lining. (A ltern a tely, plug may be
ground with lining by blocking adjuster le v e r in e x ­
tended position .) If fu lly extended plug is m ore than
0.005-inch below lining su rface,
plug.
