SPRINGS
NOTE:
A ll spring attachments, including center
bolts, a re im portant attaching p arts in that they
could a ffe c t the p erform a n ce o f vita l components
and system s, and/or could resu lt in m ajor r e ­
p a ir expense. They must be rep laced with parts
o f the sam e part numbers or with equivalent
parts i f replacem ent becom es n ecessa ry. Do not
use replacem en t p arts o f le s s e r quality o r sub­
stitute design. T orqu e values must be used as
s p ecified during rea ssem b ly to assure prop er
retention o f these p arts.
Spring Bushing
Replacement
1. R aise veh icle
fram e to rem o ve load from spring.
Support fram e secu rely.
2. R em ove forw a rd re a r wheels and tir e s .
3. A t
both
springs,
rem ove lu brication fitting from
spring eye pin. R em ove nut and washer from lock
bolt and tap bolt out o f hanger; then d riv e pin out of
spring and hanger. Jack re a r axle if n ecessary, to
lo w er front so pin w ill c le a r brake flange plate.
4. R aise
re a r axle to bring front spring eye out of
hanger just fa r enough to c le a r hanger.
NOTE:
On som e v e h ic le s it may be n ecessary
to loosen fo rw a rd torque nuts and loosen studs in

REPLACEMENT
axle brackets.

this section.)
5. Rem ove old bushing and install new bushing using
T o o l J-8459 as follow s (See Figu re 21).
a. In stall J-8459-4 on J-8459-1, lu bricate threads
and
in sert
tool
J-8459-3,
-2, bearing, w asher and nut J-8459-6
in that ord er.
Use break er bar to start bushing,
then use im pact wrench to draw bushing out o f
spring eye.
b. Rem ove old bushing from tool and position new
bushing on T o o ls J-8459-4 and -1. In sert tool
through spring eye and install J-8459-2, bearing
washer and nut J-8459-6 in that ord er. Tighten
nut to start bushing straigh t in spring eye, then
use im pact wrench to draw bushing into spring
until
bushing
stops against J-8459-2.

6. Check pin for slip fit in bushing and ream if n eces­
sary, using a standard 1.250" rea m er.
7. Repeat steps 4, 5, and 6 at opposite spring.
8. A t both springs, align spring eye in hanger, install
pin so slot in pin lin es up with lock bolt holes in
hanger and install lock bolt so wedge m ates with slot
in pin. Install lock bolt washer and nut.
9. Install wheels and tire s .
and, with veh icle at curb weight, tighten torque rod
nuts to specification s.
Spring
Removal
(R e fe r to Figu re 22)
1. Rem ove
rebound bolt and spacer from
spring re a r hanger.
2. R aise veh icle fram e to rem ove load from spring.
Support fram e secu rely.
3. Rem ove nut and washer from spring eye pin lock bolt
at inside o f front hanger and tap out bolt. Rem ove
lubrication fitting from inner end o f pin, then d rive
pin out from inner side of hanger, using a b rass d rift
and ham m er.
4. R em ove four bolts attaching spring saddle top pad to
spring saddle; hold nuts at bottom while turning bolts
at top.
5. Loosen locknuts on top pad set screw s, then loosen
set screw s.
L ift top pad and locating slide from top
o f spring.
6. L ift spring assem bly up and rea rw a rd to rem ove
from spring saddle.
Disassembly
Clamp
spring lea ves fir m ly together, using one
clam p on each side o f center bolt, o r use an arbor press.
R em ove rebound clip bolts and sp acers, then rem ove
spring center bolt. R elea se
slow ly to avoid possible injury.
Cleaning and Inspection
1. Clean a ll rust and d irt from spring lea ves, using a
w ire brush i f necessary. Make sure machined su r­
fa ces o f spring saddle a re clean.
2. Inspect each spring le a f fo r cracks o r breaks and
replace any that are damaged.
