ELECTRICAL
STARTING SYSTEM - BOSCH (4-Cyl. Engine)
No rotation and high current flow conditions
indicate one or more of the following:
•> connecting terminal or armature windings
shorted to ground
• seized bearings (this should have been
determined by rotating armature by hand)
No rotation and no current flow conditions
indicate one or more of the following:
• open armature windings (inspect commutator
for badly burned commutator bars after
disassembly)
• broken b r u s h s p r i n g s , worn b r u s h e s ,
protruding insulation between commutator bars,
or other causes could prevent good contact
between brushes and commutator
Bosch Starter Motor Relay Test
Disconnect wire connectors from the l-terminal
and G-terminal.
Measure the resistance between the terminals
with an ohmmeter. Correct resistance is
approximately 24 ohms.
Measure the resistance between either terminal
and the battery negative post. Resistance
should be infinite.
If defective, replace the relay.
If acceptable, connect wire connectors.
Remove the SOL-terminal wire connector and
connect a voltmeter between the terminal and
the battery negative post.
With the ignition switch in the start position, the
voltmeter should indicate battery voltage (12
volts).
If the battery voltage is not present, check the
related wiring, bulkhead connector (C-100) and
ignition switch adjustment.
WARNING: Check to ensure that the trans-
mission is in PARK (automatic transmission or
NEUTRAL (manual transmission) with the park-
ing brake applied before terminal G is jumped.
If the battery voltage is present and the starter
relay isn't working, connect connector I (14 DK
GRN) and jumper terminal G to ground.
If the starter relay doesn't click, repair the
ground circuit. Refer to the Electrical Trouble-
shooting Manual for detailed information.
Neutral Safety Switch-Continuity Test
Disconnect the wire connector from the switch
and test for continuity with an ohmmeter
between the center terminal pin and the
transmission case. Continuity should exist only
when the automatic transmission is in either
PARK or NEUTRAL positions.
N O T E : C h e c k linkage adjustment before
replacing the switch.
Bosch Starter Motor Relay Remowal
Disconnect the battery negative cable.
Identify, tag, and disconnect wires attached to
the relay.
