CHAPTER 11: END SEAL ASSEMBLY

:
ARNING
Be extremely careful when working near the end seal assembly to
avoid crushing injuries and painful cuts and burns.
END SEAL OPERATION
The end seal assembly creates the end (top and bottom) seals on a bag.
It seals the top of the previous bag and the bottom of the next bag at
one time. While the end seals are being formed, a knife cuts through
the film and separates the two bags.
The major components of the end seal assembly are:
• jaw actuator assembly
• drive linkage and shafts
• jaw carriers
• sealing jaws
• knife assembly
Heaters are fitted into the front and rear jaws. The number of heaters
can vary from one to three in each jaw, depending on the packaging
application. An RTD (resistive thermal device) monitors the jaw tem-
perature. Heaters used in wash-down applications have an epoxy seal
to protect from electrical short circuits caused by high levels of mois-
ture.
