Changing Forming
Tube Inserts
U l t i m a S V
FORMING TUBE INSERTS
Forming tube inserts help maintain proper film tension. Without
inserts, the pull belts may slip on the film and cause tension loss on the
film. This leads to looping and poor tracking on the forming tube and
shoulder. Excessive film tension also cause premature pull belt wear.
The two most common types of forming tube inserts are Teflon and
ceramic. The insert design addresses the problems of friction and sur-
face area. Surface area is reduced by using textured materials of vari-
ous configurations. The dimple concept reduces markings and surface
block effect. Special coatings reduce friction and provide resistance
against abrasion.
1.
Bring the machine to a controlled stop.
2.
Slide the old inserts up and out of the insert holders.
3.
Clean the tube and install new inserts.
4.
Reset the machine.
DETERMINING FTA SIZE
Forming Tube size and geometry are determined by the package size
and type of seal. The bag width is stamped on the front of a the form-
ing tube assembly. As a general rule, the bag width is equal to the web
width minus 1.5" divided by two (The web width is equal to the roll
width, and 1.5" is the film allowed for a back seal).
FTA TUBE / COLLAR CLEARANCE ADJUSTMENT
If film does not easily pull through the FTA, it may be because there is
not enough clearance between the back of the tube and the collar. To
increase the clearance between the tube and the collar:
1.
Remove power and air from the machine.
2.
Pull the film clear of the FTA.
3.
With the FTA in the machine, loosen the three top most
bolts that hold the tube and collar together.
4.
Move the tube inside the collar, leaving just enough room
between the collar and the tube to pull the film through.
