STARTER MOTOR INSPECTION
BRUSH LENGTH
Measure the brush length. If brush length is less than
the service limit, replace the brushes as a set.
STANDARD:
SERVICE LIMIT: 7.0 mm (0.28 in)
MICA DEPTH
Measure the mica depth (1).
STANDARD:
SERVICE LIMIT: 0.20 mm (0.008 in)
If the grooves are clogged or mica depth is less than the
service limit, recut the grooves using a hacksaw blade
or a small file.
ARMATURE
Check the armature and shaft gear for wear and
damage.
Check the commutator (1) for damage, dust, dirt, and
metal particles.
If there is stain, irregularity, and/or evidence of burning,
clean with emery paper (2) #500 or #600.
