foreign material trapped between the insert and
cap or rod.
If the correct clearance is indicated, replace-
ment of the bearing inserts is not necessary.
Remove the Plastigage from crankshaft journal
and bearing insert. Proceed with installation.
If bearing-to-journal c l e a r a n c e e x c e e d s the
specification, install a pair of 0.001 inch under-
size bearing inserts and measure the clearance
a s described in previous steps.
The clearance measured with a pair of 0.001
inch undersize bearing inserts installed will d e -
termine if two 0.001 inch undersize inserts or
another combination is needed to provide the
correct clearance. For example, if the initial
clearance w a s 0.003 inch, 0.001 inch undersize
inserts would reduce the clearance by 0.001
inch. T h e clearance would be 0.002 inch and
within specification. A 0.002 inch undersize in-
sert would reduce the initial clearance an addi-
tional 0.0005 inch. The clearance would then be
0.0015 inch.
Remember —
• When replacing bearing inserts, all the odd
size inserts must be on the bottom.
• T h e s i z e s of the service replacement bearing
inserts are stamped on the backs of the
inserts.
• Repeat the Plastigage measurement to verify
y o u r b e a r i n g s e l e c t i o n prior to final
assembly.
• O n c e you have selected the proper insert,
install the insert and c a p and tighten the
s c r e w s to 45 fskn (33 ft-lbs) torque.
Side Clearance Measurement
Slide snug-fitting feeler gauge between the c o n -
necting rod and crankshaft journal flange. T h e
correct clearance is 0.254 to .482 mm (0.010 to
0.019 inch). Replace the connecting rod if the
side clearance is not within specification.
