9. Set the crankshaft to b o t t o m dead center (BDC) for
the cylinder y o u are installing the piston in.
10. Remove the connecting rod cap. Install the ring
compressor, and check that the bearing is securely
in place.
11. Position the piston w i t h the a r r o w (A) facing the
t i m i n g belt side of the engine.
12. Position the piston in the cylinder, and tap it in
using the w o o d e n handle of a h a m m e r (A).
Maintain d o w n w a r d force on the ring compressor
(B) to prevent the rings f r o m expanding before
entering the cylinder bore.
13. Stop after the ring compressor pops free, and
check the connecting rod-to-crank journal
alignment before pushing the piston into place.
14. Measure the diameter of each connecting rod bolt
at point A and point B.

15. Calculate the difference in diameter between point
A and point B.
Point A—Point B = Difference in Diameter
Difference in Diameter
Specification: 0—0.1 mm (0—0.004 in.)
16. If the difference in diameter is out of tolerance,
replace the connecting rod bolt.
