Valve Spring Inspection
Check valve spring for visible damage. If so, re-
place valve spring.
Check valve spring for free length and straight-
ness.

Replace valve springs if not within specifications.
Valve Spring Installation
For installation, reverse the removal procedure.
Pay attention to the following details.
Colored area of the valve spring must be placed
on top.
To ease installation of cotters, apply oil or grease
on them so that they remain in place while relea-
sing the spring.
NOTE: Valve cotter must be properly engaged in
valve stem grooves.

After spring is installed, ensure it is properly
locked by tapping on valve stem end with a soft
hammer so that valve opens and closes a few
times.
NOTICE
An improperly locked valve spring
will cause engine damage.

Remove valve spring, see
subsection.
Push valve stem, then pull valves (intake and ex-
haust) out of valve guide.

Remove valve stem seal and discard it.
