The system provides two ways to activate/deactivate this feature: using button pushes and feature access
codes. To maximize access to the feature, the system allows the user to use the feature access codes from
his own telephone, from another station/attendant, or from a remote access trunk. To activate the feature,
the user needs to select a specific message. The user can keep pushing the feature button to scroll through
the available messages and then press "#" to select the one displayed on the terminal; the user may also
press the feature button, then enter the message number, and then press the "#" key to select a message;
the user can also dial the activation feature access code and then enter the message number to select a
message.
Once the message selection is completed successfully, the telephone is said to be in the message posting
mode, where the selected message is permanently displayed on the user's station, if it supports display.
The display of the selected message on the user's telephone serves as a visual reminder to the user and an
indication of the user's availability to people who may walk into the user's office. Stations in the message
posting mode use a special dial tone when the phone goes off hook to provide audio feedback to the user
whose terminal is in message posting mode. This is especially important for stations without display
equipment.
When a call is made to the telephone which is in the message posting mode, the selected message will be
displayed on the calling party's telephone if the calling party's phone also supports display and if the call
is internal or from a QSIG enterprise network; the user (called party) will hear a burst of ringing and then
the phone rings silently. Silent ringing removes the ringing disturbance while the called party is still able
to answer the incoming call.
To deactivate the feature, the user can push the feature button again or dial the deactivation feature access
code. The station then returns to the normal mode and the display of the selected message is cleared from
the user's telephone. The user may also activate/deactivate this feature by dialing the feature access codes
from a different telephone than his own. The feature access codes are also accessible from a remote
access trunk.
Interactions
Diverted Calls
If a call is diverted to a station which is in message posting mode through the call coverage or call
forwarding features, the calling party does not receive the posted message from the station to which the
call was diverted.
Group Extensions, Hunt Group, TEG
If a member of a group (e.g. hunt group, group page, TEG, intercom group) activates the Posted Messages
feature, this feature does not apply to calls generated from dialing the group extension. The member
remains available to receive calls and the calling party does not get the posted message.
The Posted Messages feature only applies when dialing the group member's own extension.
