Time of Day Clock Synchronization
Time of Day Clock Synchronization provides you with the capability of synchronizing your
Communication Manager system clock(s) with Internet servers providing Coordinated Universal Time
(UTC).
Time of Day Clock Synchronization enables a server to synchronize its internal clock to UTC time
provided by Internet time servers. The LINUX or Windows 2000 platforms, running NTP or SNTP
software, poll the time servers for the UTC time. UTC time is then converted to the local time of the
switch. The platform system clock then provides the synchronized time to Communication Manager.
Detailed description
UTC time is received from time servers connected to the Internet. LINUX/Windows 2000 connect,
through an Ethernet port, to these time servers using NTP or SNTP software. UTC time then is converted
to the local time of the server running Communication Manager.
ORYX/PECOS and Legacy DEFINITY
The existing design of legacy DEFINITY uses a software clock to keep track of the time of day. A SAT
command is used to set and display this time on Communication Manager. A hardware clock also is
provided to maintain the system when power is lost.
The software and hardware clocks are set whenever a manual change is made on the Set Time SAT screen
or when local time changes because of daylight savings time adjustment. These adjustments can have
significant delays (more than a minute) in a heavily loaded system because of process priorities so the
accuracy of the time actually can be compromised by a manual set of the time.
The software clock is not synchronized with an external timing source so this time will draft over time.
Corrections for the drift of the software and hardware clocks can be made by software on LINUX but not
on Oryx/Pecos.
S8100 Media Server and Windows 2000
The system time is maintained by the operating system at UTC. Library functions are provided to obtain
local time. The time zone and use of daylight savings time are set from the time/date dialog box on the
desktop.
