Interactions
Automatic Alternate Routing (AAR)
AAR routes UDP calls. (Included with UDP is the required AAR subset.) If AAR is enabled in
addition to UDP, then the 7-digit AAR number provides the same routing as UDP.
Dial Plan
— All of the extension numbers on a media server are not necessarily part of UDP. Any that
do not belong to UDP are handled by a regular, non-UDP Dial Plan associated with the
server.
— When administering the Dial Plan screen and designating a group of extensions as UDP
non-local, you can specify whether you want to search for local extensions first or last.
This allows flexibility to change extensions from local to non-local and vice-versa.
DID Trunk Group
DID calls to a UDP extension number may require that the DID trunk group insert enough digits
to create the full extension number. For example, if the DID trunk provides 4 digits, but a 5-digit
UDP is in place, then the appropriate leading digit must be inserted.
Distributed Communications System (DCS)
UDP is required when DCS is provided. The necessary UDP software is provided with the DCS
software.
Extension Number Portability (ENP)
If an extension code is administered to use ENP node routing, ENP routes the call to the correct
server. If AAR is enabled in addition to UDP, the 7-digit AAR number provides the same routing
as UDP (that is, via ENP).

Voice Message Retrieval

Voice Message Retrieval allows attendants, phone users, and remote-access users to retrieve Leave Word
Calling (LWC) and Call Coverage messages.
Detailed description
Voice Message Retrieval is only used for the retrieval of messages. When a terminal is in Voice Message
Retrieval mode, it cannot be used to make calls or access other features. Voice Message Retrieval can be
used to retrieve your own messages or messages for another user. However, a different user's messages
can only be retrieved by a user at a phone or attendant console in the coverage path, by an administered
system-wide message retriever, or by a remote-access user when the extension and associated security
code are known. The number of simultaneous Voice Message Retrieval users possible depends on the
number of speech-synthesizer circuit packs used in the system.
Certain phones and attendants can be designated for system-wide message retrieval. These system-wide
retrievers are the same as those used for Display Message Retrieval and have the same privileges. Voice
Message Retrieval cannot be accessed from rotary phones.
