５ MEASUREMENT OPERATION
■ FFM observation
I n the ordinary contact-mode AFM, the specimen-sca
canti lever axis as shown in the left figure below. In the case of FFM (Friction Fo
M icroscope), on the other hand, the specimen-scanning d
canti lever axis as shown in the right figure below. The cantilever is twi
scann ing due to the friction force occurring between the specimen surface and the
canti lever tip. The FFM measures the friction force from this torsion of the cantilever.
Scanning direction
The following is the procedure for FFM observation.
1.
Select the FFM radio button at the left bottom of the Contact Mode tab
window.
2.
Click on the Scan button.

The scanning direction automatically changes by 90 ° when FFM is selected.
The white locations in the FFM image indicate the areas where the friction force is
large.
