Engine top-end problems usually affect engi ne perfo rmance. These problem can be diagnosed by a compression
test
or
by tracing eng ine
noises
to the top-end
wit
h
a
sou ndi
ng rod/stethoscope.
If
the
performa
nce
is
poor at
low
speeds,
check
for
whi te smoke
in
t he crankcase breather hose. If
t
he hose is
sm
oky,
check
for
a seized piston ring
(page 12-13).
