CYLINDER HEAD/ VALVES
TROUBLESHOOTING
• Engine top-end problems usually affect engi ne perfo rmance. These problem can be diagnosed by a compression test or
by tracing eng ine noises to the top-end wit h a sou ndi ng rod/stethoscope.
• If the performa nce is poor at low speeds, check for whi te smoke in t he crankcase breather hose. If t he hose is sm oky,
check for a seized piston ring (page 12-13).
Compression too low, hard starting or poor performance at low speed
• Valves:
- Incorrect valve adjustm ent
- Burn ed o r bent valve
- Incorrect valve t iming
- Broken valve spring
- Uneven valve seat ing
• Cylinder head:
- Leaking or damaged head gasket
- Warped or cracked cyli nder head
• Worn cylinder, piston o r piston rings (page 12-1 3)
Compression too high, overheating or knocking
• Excessive carbon build-up on piston crown o r on combustion chamber
Excessive smoke
• Cylinder head:
- Worn valve stem o r valve guide
- Damaged stem seal
• Worn cylinder, pisto n or piston rings (page 12-13)
Excessive noise
• Cylin der head:
- Incorrect va lve adjustment
- Sticking valve or broken va lve sp ring
- Damaged o r worn camshaft
- Loose or wo rn cam chai n
- Worn or damaged cam chain
- Worn or damaged cam chain t ensioner
- Worn cam sprocket teeth
• Worn cylinder, piston or piston rings (page 12-13)
Rough idle
• Low cylinder compression
