Measuring ring-to-groove clearance
– Clean annular groove of piston before check.
Segment ring
1st compression ring
2nd compression ring
Oil scraper rings (2 parts)
Oil scraper rings (3 parts)
Measuring cylinder bore
Special tools and workshop equipment required
♦ Cylinder gauge - VAS 6078-
NOTICE
Risk of damage to the surface of the cylinder bore caused by
incorrect machining.
– Do not machine cylinder bore (reboring, honing, grinding)
with workshop equipment.
– Use a cylinder gauge - VAS 6078- to take measurements at
3 points criss-cross in transverse direction -A- and in longitu‐
dinal direction -B-.
• Maximum deviation from nominal dimension: 0.08 mm.

Note
Measuring the cylinder bores must not be done when the cylinder
block is mounted to the engine and gearbox stand - VAS 6095- ,
as incorrect measurements may result.
4.4 Checking radial clearance of conrod
bearings
Special tools and workshop equipment required
♦ Plastigage
Work sequence
– Remove conrod bearing cap.
– Clean bearing cap and bearing journal.
– Place a Plastigage corresponding to the width of the bearing
on the journal or into the bearing shells.
– Fit conrod bearing cap and tighten to 30 Nm (without additional
turning further to a torque angle). The crankshaft must not ro‐
tate while doing so.
– Remove conrod bearing cap again.
