Before beginning this procedure, determine which OC-12 shelf is
being removed. If the shelf being removed is externally timed, the
timing transfer can be done with a mult-out cable to the
associated OC-3; or if holdover mode is acceptable, the timing
cable can be switched later in this procedure.

Notify maintenance center that alarms will be generated.
4.
Before beginning this procedure, verify ring integrity and path
protection switching function. At the start nodes (NODE 1 OC-12
and NODE 5 OC-3), remove the receive (IN) fiber from ONE of the
MAIN OLIUs. Verify no critical (CR) alarms are present.
Reconnect the fiber and wait until alarms clear. Label each fiber
and repeat this step on the other MAIN OLIU.
5.
Use rtrv-map-network: and rtrv-map-neighbor:
commands to determine the configuration of the OC-3 ring being
upgraded and how the individual nodes are connected.
6.
Upgrade all OC-3 nodes to OC-3 TARP Release 13 or later
software, if required.

CAUTION:
This step is very important. You should review the
association among cross connections from the
Administration and Provisioning section and the Commands
and Reports section of Volume 1 of this manual. Improper
cross connections will result in a loss of service.
Using office records or the rtrv-crs-( ): commands,
determine the drop and pass-through cross connects at the nodes
being converted.
8.
Equip the spare OC-3 shelf with new SYSCTL, OHCTL,
TGS/TG3, and new 24/29-Type OLIUs circuit packs using
procedures of NTP-016.
