2.46 LITER (150 CID) FOUR-CYLINDER ENGINE
Hydraulic Valwe Tappets
Remove the cylinder head cover. Refer to
C y l i n d e r H e a d C o v e r R e m o v a l for the
procedure.
Remove the bridge and pivot assemblies and
rocker arms by removing the two capscrews at
each bridge. Alternately loosen each capscrew,
one turn at a time, to avoid damaging the bridge.
Remove the push rods.
NOTE: Retain all the components in the same
order as removed to facilitate installation in the
original positions.
Remove the tappets through the push rod
openings in the cylinder head with Hydraulic
Valve Tappet Removal and Installation Tool,
J-21884.

removed to facilitate installation in the original
locations.
NOTE: It is not necessary to charge the tappet
assemblies with engine oil. They will charge
themselves within a very short period of engine
operation.
Hydraulic Valve Tappets Installation
Dip each tappet assembly in AMC Engine Oil
Supplement (EOS), or equivalent.
Use Hydraulic Valve Tappet Removal and
Installation Tool J-21884 to install each tappet in
the same bore from where it was originally
removed.
Install the push rods in their original locations.
Install the rocker arms and bridge and pivot
assemblies at their original locations. Loosely
install the capscrews at each bridge.
Tighten the capscrews alternately, one turn at a
time, to avoid damaging the bridges.
Pour the remaining E O S over the entire valve
actuating assembly.
NOTE: The E O S must remain with the engine oil
for at least 1 609 km (1,000 mi) but need not be
drained until the next scheduled oil change.
Install the cylinder head cover. Refer to Cylinder
Head Cover Installation for the procedure.

Removal
NOTE: This procedure is for the removal of
valve springs and oil deflectors with the cylinder
head installed on the cylinder block. Refer to
Valve Removal in the MOT. 2.46L manual for
the procedure if the cylinder head is removed
from the cylinder block.
