TOWING SAFETY PRECAUTIONS
Secure all loose or protruding parts of a dam-
aged vehicle
Lift the end of a vehicle being towed a minimum
of 4-inches off the road surface. Be sure the
opposite end of the vehicle also has adequate
ground clearance.
Use safety chains at all times. The chains must
be independant of the tow truck lifting and tow-
ing attachments.
Do not allow any portion of the lifting or towing
attachments to bear against the fuel tank of the
vehicle being towed.
Do not go under the vehicle after it has been
raised by the lifting and towing attachments.
Do not allow anyone to ride in a vehicle being
towed.
Follow all State and local laws regarding tow
s p e e d s , warning lights, and nighttime
illumination.
Do not attempt a towing operation that could
jeopardize the operator, bystanders, or other
motorists.
Do not exceed a towing speed of 48 km/h (30
mph).
Avoid towing distances of more than 24 km (15
miles) whenever possible.
Use towing dollies or a car hauler-type type
wrecker whenever the vehicle is locked and the
ignition key is not available. Use dollies or a
hauler-type wrecker whenever transmission,
transfer case or axle damage is suspected.
Never attach tow chains or a tow sling to the
bumper, steering linkage, universal joints or
propeller shaft.
FRONT TOWING
CAUTION: Use tow chains with T-hooks for at-
tachment to the frame rails. Do not use J-hooks
under any circumstances.
Attach the T-hooks (A) to the slots in the from
end of each frame rail.
Position each chain over the top of each front
spring shackle (B).
Double wrap each chain.
Position the tow bar under the front bumper.
Attach the safety chains (C) to the lower half of
the front spring shackles.
