The ion source should be cleaned according to your laboratory's schedule, but you should also
clean it if you notice deterioration in the performance of your instrument. The frequency of
cleaning is determined by the number of samples you run, as well as the types of samples you
run. Since the ion source is the component closest to the sample, it needs to be cleaned more
often.
The goal of cleaning the ion source cartridge is to remove any contamination from its
surfaces, which restores its electrostatic properties. You can clean the ion source cartridge with
an abrasive, sonic, or electropolishing method, but we recommend using abrasives.

any of its components.
The steps for removing the ion source cartridge are different depending on whether or not
your ISQ 7000 mass spectrometer has a vacuum probe interlock (VPI). Depending on your
instrument, refer to either

the ISQ 7000 Mass Spectrometer with no VPI"
To remove the ion source cartridge from the ISQ 7000 Mass Spectrometer with a VPI
1. Twist off the round vacuum interlock knob located on the interior front panel and set it
aside. As you can see, the knob covers access to a long tunnel that goes into the
instrument. This tunnel is called the vacuum interlock.
