Note Some of the cleaning procedures in this section require the use of methanol. If
methanol is unavailable or prohibited, substitute LCMS-grade or GC-grade ethanol or
isopropyl alcohol. Do not use denatured ethanol as it may contain impurities that
contaminate the GC-MS system.
You can clean the following delicate components inside the vacuum manifold:
• Source-to-ion guide spacers
• Thumbscrew-repeller spacers
• Insulating spacers
• Lens heater block and grounding strap
• Repeller insulator
• Dynode, electron multiplier and anode feedthroughs (except the o-rings)
• 20-pin feedthrough (except the o-ring)
• 4-pin feedthrough (except the o-ring)
• Filament retaining spring
• Ion guide clamp
• Ion guide and quadrupole wires
• Exit and entrance endcaps
• Ion guide clamp
• Inner ball seal
• Sealing ball
• Tray alignment pins
• Vent valve knob (except o-ring)
• Source magnets
• Top (glass) manifold cover
Note Cleaning these components are not part of the expected maintenance.
To clean delicate components of the ISQ 7000 mass spectrometer, you will need the following
cleaning supplies:
• Applicators, cotton-tipped
• Deionized water
• Detergent (Alconox, Micro, or equivalent)
• Gas, clean and dry (Nitrogen, Helium or equivalent)
• Glass beakers
• Gloves, cleanroom, (see the ISQ and TSQ GC-MS Spare Parts Guide for ordering
information)
• Methanol, reagent grade (or other suitable polar solvent, such as Ethanol)
• Toothbrush that will not leave any plastic residue
CAUTION INSTRUMENT DAMAGE: Do NOT use acetone to clean components made of
polymers such as polycarbonate or Ultem or it will damage them. Also, this procedure
should not be used on any component outside the vacuum manifold.
