This signals the ECM when the Alternator (ALT) is charging.
Alternator (ALT) FR Signal
Check lor a short in th€ wire {ALT
F line):
1 . O i s c o n n e c t t h e A L T G R N 4 P
(3P)* connector from the ALT.
2. Turn the ignition switch ON {ll).
3. Measure voltage between ECM
connector terminals C17 and A9.

Inspection of ALT FR Signal.
Check for a shon in the wire {ALT
F line):
1. Turn the ignition switch OFF.
2. Disconnecl the negative baa
tery cable from the battery.
3. Disconnect the ECM connector
c ( 3 1 P ) .
4. Check for continuity between
b o d y g r o u n d a n d E C M c o n -
nector terminal C17.
ls there approx.5 V?
Check the operation ofthe ALT:
1 . T u r n t h e ; O n i t i o n s w i t c h O F F -
2 . R e c o n n e c t t h e A L T G R N 4 P
(3P)* connector to the ALT.
3 . S t a r t t h e e n g i n e . H o l d t h e
engine at 3,000 rpm wkh no
load {in Park or neutral) until
t h e r a d i a t o r f a n c o m e s o n ,
then let it idle.
4. Measure voltage bet/veen ECM
con nector termina ls C17 and A9.
Ropair short in the wir6 between
t h 6 E C M ( C 1 7 ) a n d t h e A L T .
Substitute a known-good ECM
and recheck. It prescribed voltagG
is now available, replace th€ origi-
nal ECM.
Does the voltage decrease when
headlights and rear defogger are
turned on?
ALT FR signal is OK.
Check tor an open in the wire {ALT
F line):
1. Turn the ignition switch OFF-
2. Disconnect the negative bat-
tery cable from the battery.
3. Disconnect the ECM connec
tor C (31P).
4. Disconnect the ALT GRN 4P
(3Pi* connector from the ALT.
5. Connect the ALT GRN 4P (3p)*
connector terminal No. 4 (No.

Ropair open wire bstw€an the
ECM {C17} and rhe ALT.
