Piston Rings
Replacement
Using a ring expander, remove old piston rlngs.
C l e a n a l l r i n g g r o o v e s t h o r o u g h l y .
o U s e a s q u a r e d - o f l b r o k e n r i n g o r r i n g g r o o v e
cleaner with blade to fit piston grooves.

o n d g r o o v e i s 1 . 2 m m ( 0 . 0 4 7 i n ) w i d e , a n d o i l
r i n g g r o o v e i s 2 . 8 m m ( 0 . 1 1 0 i n ) w i d e .

File down blade if necessary.
CAUTION: Do not use a wire brush to clean the
ring lands, or cut ring lands deeper with cleaning
tool.
NOTE: lf the piston is to be separated from the con
necting rod, do not install new rings yet.
Install new rings in the proper sequence and posa-
t i o n ( s e e p a g e 7 2 1 ) .
Do not use old piston rings.
PISTON RING

Using a piston, push a new ring into the cvlinder
bore 15 - 20 mm 10.6 0.8 in) f rom the bottom.

g a u g e :
lf the gap is too small, check to see if you have
t h e p r o p e r r i n g s f o r y o u r e n g i n e .

lf the gap is too large, recheck the cylinder bore
d i a m e t e r a g a i n s t t h e w e a r l i m i t s o n p a g e 7 - 1 3 .
lf the bore is over the service limit, the cylinder
block must be rebored.
Piston Ring End-Gap:
Top Ring
Standard (New):0.20 - 0.35 mm

0.20 - 0.30 mm

Service Limit:
0.60 mm {0.024 in)
Second Ring
Standard {New): 0.40 - 0.55 mm

Standard (New): 0.20 - 0.50 mm
