7.7.1

Transmission Removal

WARNING:
injury. NEVER lift a transmission alone; enlist
the help of at least one assistant or use a suit-
able hoist or overhead crane and sling.
1. Level the vehicle, ground the attachment, place the
travel select lever in the [N] NEUTRAL position, place
the neutral lock lever in the [N] NEUTRAL LOCK
position, turn the wheels fully to the left, engage the
parking brake switch, and shut the engine OFF.
2. Place an Accident Prevention Tag on both the
ignition switch and steering wheel, stating that the
vehicle should not be operated. (Refer to Section
1.5, Accident Prevention Tag Usage .)
3. Open the engine compartment cover. Allow the
engine, transmission and hydraulic fluid to cool.
4. Remove the engine hood. (Refer to Section 3.7.2,
Engine Hood .)
5. Remove the five thumbscrews (1), flat washers (2)
and lockwashers (3) securing the front engine
cover (4) to the hydraulic reservoir and the bracket (5)
on the battery box. Remove the front engine cover.

6. Remove engine side battery box cover (6). Remove
wing nuts (7) and carriage bolts (8) and set cover
and mounting hardware aside for later re-assembly.
7. Disconnect the negative (-) battery cable (9) at the
negative (-) terminal on the battery in the engine side
battery box.
8. Disconnect the negative (-) cable (10) at the bottom
of the battery equalizer (11).

9. Disconnect and label wires connected to the battery
equalizer (11), NATO slave receptacle (12), fuel
shut-off relay (13), solargizer control box (14) and
starter solenoid (15).
10. Remove the three carriage bolts (16) and elastic
locknuts (17) securing the bottom of the battery
equalizer bracket (18) to the engine pod. Remove
the capscrew (19) and elastic locknut (20) at the top
right corner of the equalizer bracket and remove the
entire bracket from the vehicle.

11. Support the battery box assembly (21) with a hoist or
some other means and remove the eight
capscrews (22) and lockwashers (23) securing it to
the frame. Move the battery box forward and left so
that, when removed, the transmission can clear the
battery. Support the battery boxes so that the battery
box crossmembers (24) do not rest on the drive
shaft (25).
