7. Remove the two capscrews (7) and lockwashers (8)
securing the remote engine oil filter assembly (9) to
the transfer case (10).

8. Leave the hoses and fittings connected to the filter
head and allow the entire remote engine oil filter
assembly (9) to hang down out of the way of transfer
case removal.
IMPORTANT: To help ensure optimum performance, the
drive shaft assemblies are specially balanced as a unit at
the factory. When servicing any flange yoke, slip yoke or
drive shaft tube, order a complete assembly if compo-
nents are bent or damaged. Refer to the appropriate
parts manual for ordering information.
Note: The drive shaft assemblies are balanced assem-
blies. Mark the yoke and transmission, transfer case,
axles, and the shaft and slip yoke so that these compo-
nents can be returned to their original positions when
reinstalled. Yokes at both ends of the drive shaft must be
in the same plane to help prevent excessive vibration.
9. Remove the eight [4-Front and 4-Rear]
capscrews (11), sixteen [8-Front and 8-Rear]
lockwashers (12) and eight [4-Front and 4-Rear]
nuts (13) securing the flange yokes to the transfer
case and transmission.
10. Remove the drive shaft assembly (14).

Transfer Case and Drive Shafts
11. Remove the four capscrews (15) and two straps (16)
securing the bearing crosses to the tran sfer case
(17).
12. Remove the four capscrews (18) and two straps (19)
securing the bearing crosses to the rear axle (20).
13. Remove the rear drive shaft assembly (21).

14. Repeat Steps 11-13 to remove the front drive shaft
assembly.

15. Position a transmission jack or suitable lifting device
beneath the transfer case. Operate the jack to
contact and support the transfer case, but DO NOT
jack up or raise the transfer case itself. Secure the
transfer case to the jack or lifting device with a sling.
16. Unbolt the four capscrews (22) and lockwashers (23)
securing the transfer case (24) to the vehicle
chassis. Carefully lower the transfer case and
remove it from beneath the vehicle.
