Transfer Case Internal Component
Troubleshooting
Note: The following conditions may be noticed when
inspecting parts during transfer case repair. Perform all
remedies that apply to the conditions noticed.
Problem
1. Gear teeth worn or grooved.
2. Gear teeth overheated.
3. Gear teeth pitted.
4. Worn inside cup or worn
tapered roller bearing.

Cause
1. Insufficient lubrication.
1. Prolonged operation at high
temperatures (transfer case oil
above 230° F [110° C]). (Refer
to Section 6.5.1, Transfer Case
and Drive Shaft Troubleshooting ,
Step 5, Transfer case
overheating.)
1. Insufficient lubrication.
2. Lubricant contaminated.
1. Incorrect bearing "end play."
2. Insufficient lubrication.
3. Lubricant contaminated.
Remedy (See Note)
• Replace gear(s) as needed.
• Fill transfer case with to correct
level with recommended oil (refer
to Section 2.13.14, a. Transfer
Case Oil Level Check ).
• Replace gear(s) as needed.
• Fill transfer case to correct level
with recommended oil (refer to
Section 2.13.14, b. Transfer Case
Oil Change ).
• Replace gear(s) as needed.
• Fill transfer case to correct level
with recommended oil (refer to
Section 2.13.14, b. Transfer Case
Oil Change ).
• Replace bearing.
• Check end play.
• Fill transfer case to correct level
with recommended oil (refer to
Section 2.13.14, b. Transfer Case
Oil Change ).
